unreasonable Posted March 18, 2017 Posted March 18, 2017 It should be easy enough to test in RL - not with a plane, but with a freely rotating toy prop on a stick which has no tail/fuselage to complicate matters. Hold stick into wind tilted up at at angle. It should be obvious if the stick is being pulled up/down, sideways or both. I think Moach should do this. 1
BlitzPig_EL Posted March 18, 2017 Posted March 18, 2017 To be fair, your toy prop should be powered by a motor, and not driven by the wind, but I see what you are getting at.
Holtzauge Posted March 18, 2017 Posted March 18, 2017 Some more info on prop effects from Darrel Stinton's excellent book The design of the airplane. This book has tons of information on aerodynamics and flight mechanics and does a very good job of presenting it all in an understandable way. Highly recommened.

Both aircraft props and windmill blades produce lift force - if they are pitched relative to the airflow the lift force will be asymmetric in both cases. Surely someone has a toy shop nearby with propellors/windmills on a stick?
Holtzauge Posted March 18, 2017 Posted March 18, 2017 I feel a subtle disturbance in the force.......Could it be that this experiment has already been performed in Bangkok recently?......
unreasonable Posted March 19, 2017 Posted March 19, 2017 No, I am not the sneaky type, to lay ambushes. Perhaps if it was our departed comrade I would make an exception. Just trying to think through the basics. Unfortunately my recollection of physics is no-where near good enough to actually calculate any of forces we have been discussing, if I even knew how to do it in the first place. I am also not much of a handyman, so the fun Youtube videos on making your own wind turbine are not going to get turned into physical product by me, unfortunately. Next time I am at the department store I will have a look in the toy department (Oh all right, I always do...) Unfortunately something as simple, cheap and fun as a propeller on a stick probably does not have the high margin required anymore.
19//Moach Posted March 19, 2017 Author Posted March 19, 2017 well - seems we're not the first ones to get into this same discussion: http://www.homebuiltairplanes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24265 just a curiosity - still reading to see how it ends...
