General thoughts, impressions, and the like

OK so after a few dogfights there are a number of things that are clear to me.

First the damage models are amazingly well done. If I plink a bird in the front cowl, it will smoke, if i hit it in either wing, it will have issues maintaining stability, if I hit it in the tail, it may lose all vertical control or yaw control. I am very very impressed. I love seeing me hit a bird in the tail and NOT seeing the engine start smoking like that OTHER WW2 mmo sim thingy out there.

Next, there has been much debate about the tracers and the sounds. Let me say that I think the sounds are absolutly spot on. much better than those pea shooters sounds from CLoD, or the sounds from WT. I do also think that the tracers are close to accurate. not 100% mind you, I think they are just a hair to large, but I do think they are very close. it will be interesting to see them when straffing targets, if the tracers bounce in unintended directions as in real life, and what not.

Finally, that lag so bad fighterz lol. It will take a lot of practice to even be viable in PvP with that thing...which is correct since most of the lagg series wasnt all that good. They were servicable, but they werent all that. You need to be very selective about when to get into engagements in this bird, and if you get jumped the best thing you can try to do i think is to try to split s away and carry the energy into a tight turn to try and get on the bad guys six...thats about the only defensive manuever i can think of working with this thing.

Definitely the sounds of the LaGG's 20mm is just fantabuloustatic!!! It's like you're shooting the real thing!!

Agree with all the above apart from I like the tracers as they are. I might be wrong, but I have watched a lot of WW2 footage and they look like they look pretty accurate to me. I aslo like the explosions and the fact they have slowed down the fly by view. I love hearing the plane in the flyby view now.

oh i think by and large they are darn accurate, i just also think that the size is a tad large. not much mind you...just a tad

I just got into the game, and I was wondering. Does the Lagg have a tendency to nose up consistently, I seem to have to bury the stick just to get the nose of the aircraft below the horizon, and landing so far has been an issue for me but I'm still working on it.

P.S. Yes I am also a convert from that " OTHER WW2 mmo sim thingy", this is my first experience with the IL2 series as a whole.

P.S.S. I'm guessing trim control has not been put into the game as of yet?

No trim control yet, hence the constant nose up mit der Laggengrossen. The 109 is not too flash in keeping the nose down either as the elevator adjustment doesn't compensate fully.

I am really impressed with the bullet and canon strikes on the LaGG. Unfortunately I cannot comment on strikes on the 109 as I haven't bloody well managed to hit it yet.

This ^^

I have never played anything like this before and it's freaking ALPHA, the polish in this game at this state is better then most games post release, ..Yeah that's right I'm looking at you BF4

I never got into ROS because WWI was never really my thing with it comes to aviation, but I had always heard great things about the Rise of Flight game and it's support of the community so I had high hopes for this game.

I have been so disappointed with the hype some games get then they just deliver a bottom of the barrel product, but not the case here. I have never played an alpha build of a game I have enjoyed so much EVER, with Kerbal Space Program a distant second

I'm impressed with the AI so far. I really think this is essential part of a great combat sim. Bad AI can really break it......This is going to be good.

Thank you to all that are involved.

Are the graphical damage models complete now? I haven't played hardly at all but I shot up a Lagg and looked at it with externals and I couldn't see bullet holes etc.

So far the sim is looking fantastic :salute:

Well in one of my flights yesterday, i shot up the tail of a 109, the left side of the tail, and saw his horizontal stab on that side separate from the fuselage.  I have also notice holes on the wings of AI as I got up close and personal with them. I also do love how unstable flight becomes if you are that close thanks to prop wash.

Yeah I noticed that too... makes the whole gunnery thing more tricky.

If camera external view could be made to work like in IL2 and fix some control settings I'd be very happy with this sim already.

Even when there is only 2 plane types available and progress is only 35%.

Flying is more difficult than in IL2, so there's more challenge.

Scenery looks good. Sounds are good and flying the me-109 very fun so far.

Need more practise with the Lagg.

I like dog fights already more than CoD ever. A very promising start.  This game has the same immersive magic that IL2 did before it was hacked.

One of the best lines I ever saw on this board.

100% agree of course.

Things are going to get even better, but it really exceeded my expectations based on feelings of flight and combat.

After getting into some more dogfights, I have to say this is much more engaging then anything I've played before. In Hello War Kitty Island Thunder Adventure (War Thunder) , dog fights always felt static and cheap, Hi yoyo's and scissors were move's you could do if you wanted to and had the energy but those maneuvers were always restricted to the poor flight models and the way the game handled energy and the sense of speed.

In this game fights evolve into these maneuvers naturally because of the way the flight models work and the physics engine is just awesome. I got into the a few scissor engagements with 109's, knowing I was in a bad situation and looking desperately for a way out, I couldn't help but be impressed by the way the planes almost seem to slingshot away and then back into each other as we both fought against the changing air pressure while trying to gain a good firing solution.

I mean there were a few fights where we were almost on top of each other, so close I could almost reach out and touch the AI target at times, try this in War Thunder and you are just asking for a collision because the FM's are so unpredictable that you just can't get that kind of fine control.

Just wait until we get multi player and you'll be flying against human controlled planes.

Different flying styles and skill levels.

Lovin' all the 'guns, guns, guns,' but not loving the special effects of a bogey bitting-it into mother earth...the simpler animations, like I remember them last iteration, were much, much nicer... :)
