Flying__Horse Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 Hi all, Just a question: In the G2 there is always a steel or metal plate behind and above the pilots head. Is it possible to remove that cuse the sight backwarts is not good at all. Im asking that cus in youtube i've seen some movies where some are flying the G2 (at least they write that) with no metal plate behind and above the pilots head. Thanks FH

Finkeren Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 (edited) You can remove the curved uppermost part of the armour plate on all the 109s and in the G2 and G4 you further have the option of replacing the armoured headrest with one that's partly made of armoured glass, which greatly improves field of view. There is no option to completely remove the plate, and I have seen no sources that indicate, that this was regularly done historically. The armoured headrest was added to the design early in the war based on early combat experiences. armour protecting the pilot from behind appears almost universally in fighter designs around the start of the war, since it was quickly realized, that this greatly improved the survivability of not only the pilot but the plane itself, since pilots were being killed (and thus the plane lost) by hits that otherwise would not have prevented the plane from getting home. The armoured headrest performs a vital function and removing it would be as rare as a WW2 infantryman going into combat without his helmet on. Edited March 13, 2017 by Finkeren
