Rjel Posted March 12, 2017 Posted March 12, 2017 My first attempts at creating realistic looking (to me) B/W gun camera film using the IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad/Moscow flight sim. I've watched a lot of gun camera film through the years, I think this mimics it pretty well. Suggestions and critiques are welcomed. 3
curiousGamblerr Posted March 12, 2017 Posted March 12, 2017 Nice! I'd be interested to know how you created the jumpy effect. Did you just chop up the footage and add a jumpy frame here and there? It's pretty cool. My only suggestion is to throw some blur on there. That's the sharpest gun camera footage I've ever seen
Original_Uwe Posted March 12, 2017 Posted March 12, 2017 Really looks good I'd love to see how you did it! Personally yes I think some blue would look good, and slow it down. If I recall correctly gun cams ran at something like 1/2 or 1/4 speed? I'm not really sure how that equates to frames per second in the game or in a cinematic sense. Also, weren't they typically triggered by the gun triggers? I.e. Didn't start recording until the pilot was shooting?
Rjel Posted March 12, 2017 Author Posted March 12, 2017 (edited) I used Nero 2016 to process the in game footage. That program has several filters in it to strip the color and have the aged look. The stutter I think was the result of those filters. I've seen, and I'm sure most of us have too, really grainy and blurred guncam. Some so bad it was hard to see enough detail to really make out what was happening. On the other hand, I've seen some late war film from the ETO especially, that looked like it was just shot yesterday. So I tried to hit a middle ground with mine. I couldn't blur it with the Nero program as it only allowed me a 4x blur and one even more blurry. I think YouTube allows similar effects, including a slower replay. I think the next time I try this maybe I'll record the in game replay at a slower speed. That might be too slow though. The P-51 is only plane I'm familiar enough with to say that they could toggle the camera to just film or it could be used just when the guns were fired. The film usually ran a few seconds beyond the release of the trigger. I would assume so as to film the bullets striking the target. In my "film" I tried to simulate that. It didn't come across as well as I wanted but there are several cuts in the sequences. All in all I thought it turned out okay. It was a lot more work than I expected and gave me a lot more respect for those who have created their films from flight sims. I'll never have their talents. I'm disappointed no one mentioned the "projector sound" I added. I thought that was a stroke of genius. That and it was easy to do. Edited March 12, 2017 by Rjel
6./ZG26_Emil Posted March 12, 2017 Posted March 12, 2017 (edited) Here's mine, probably best to render in 240 or 480p, plenty of shake and other filters and a low fps definitely not 60 fps...can't remember what I used, might be 20 or so https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JG2TUOmdu1c Edited March 12, 2017 by 6./ZG26_Emil 4
Rjel Posted March 12, 2017 Author Posted March 12, 2017 That was very good. Maybe it's because I've watched so many B/W films through the years, but the BoX world looks very realistic to me without color.
TG-55Panthercules Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 Pretty cool - I just watched the second one without sound though, because weren't these just video cams without audio? I suppose you could figure they had been turned into short subjects for theater audiences with the addition of sound effects or something. Also, if they were activated when the trigger was pressed (and then kept running for a few seconds afterward to catch the results), maybe the pilot would snap off a real short burst just to get the camera rolling, before he really started his main firing run? Anyway, it is amazing what can be done with the camera functionality in this sim, if you have the talent for making the videos, as you folks clearly do
Original_Uwe Posted March 19, 2017 Posted March 19, 2017 Are you guys using game track recording for this?
Rjel Posted March 19, 2017 Author Posted March 19, 2017 Are you guys using game track recording for this? I record in game first then I use Geforce Experience to re-record the game track. Then I run it through Nero 2016. I've never really experimented with Nero except to use it to burn DVDs from movies that I've recorded on my DVR. Tonight I've been playing with Nero some and have found a lot of special effects I never knew it had. So far the results are pretty sweet. Even with my limited abilities. I'm hoping to get some more GunCam put together over the next few days to post.
Original_Uwe Posted March 19, 2017 Posted March 19, 2017 How does the Gforce experience thing work? I've got a 980 so I assume I have the ability.
216th_Jordan Posted March 19, 2017 Posted March 19, 2017 looks good, needs a little more zoom though I think

I think it works great and the results speak for themselves.

Rjel Posted March 20, 2017 Author Posted March 20, 2017 (edited) That was good. Can you tell me how you recorded that at slower speed (it appeared to me anyway) but kept it from looking jerky? Edited March 20, 2017 by Rjel
curiousGamblerr Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 Since we're sharing guncam vids, here's mine

What are your cam settings for having the camera set in the center of the plane of close to the 20mm?
