Resources for the learning/reading of the Cyrillic alphabet

Hey guys,

 

I've read recently that some of you guys suggest learning the fundamentals of the Cyrillic alphabet to better understand the phonetics of the language and to interpret the writing.

 

This obviously benefits we simmers for a couple of primary reasons: Clearer coms during ops and a better understanding of what is what in the VVS aircraft.

 

Can you offer any decent resources on getting this information down? A simple Google search gives me basic translations for the letters but I'd like to go a little deeper than simply understanding what English letter the character represents.

Personally, I don't see the benefit in learning the alphabet without the language, but perhaps I'm missing something.

 

I just wanted to chime in with a funny story from my time in Ukraine many years ago:

 

There's this market/mall in Kiev called MEGA MARKET. It's pretty incredible, including a grocery store, mall shops, laser tag and I think it even had go karts. The laser tag was also the best laser tag I've ever been too, with all sorts of two story structures and stuff, really awesome.

 

Anyway, the funny part was that they took the English works "MEGA MARKET" and then used the Cyrillic pronunciations of the letters. So the resulting name of this place was neither English or Russian, but rather just a mess of Cyrillic sounds applied to English words. You'd think they would either a) translate the words "mega" and "market" to Russian or b) just say the English phrase "mega market" but no, half and half. I love it. Ukraine was such a fun and interesting place to visit.

 

There are a lot of funny language idiosyncrasies around the world, some of the best come from Western colonialism ("kamusta" for "hello" in Tagalog from the Spanish "como estas" is a good one), but this MEGA MARKET thing stands out as my favorite.

 

Anyway, good luck learning Cyrillic and report back if it actually helps you in game!
