US63_SpadLivesMatter Posted March 1, 2017 Posted March 1, 2017 (edited) In case anyone is wondering if the U17 Strike Modification with its boost mode is worth it (speed-wise anyhow), I did some quick comparisons of level flight speeds. Manual engine settings, got up to top speed with cowls open, then closed them and ran them until they died. One at highest combat setting, one at emergency/boost for each craft. =EXPEND=CG_Justin Posted March 1, 2017 Posted March 1, 2017 Awesome data! Thanks for the comparison. I'm stuck at work until 7:30am so I'm chomping at the bit wanting to fly this beast. I hope someone posts a video using the 6x 20mm against some Peshka's or IL-2's.
Finkeren Posted March 1, 2017 Posted March 1, 2017 Seems much in line with what I've found so far. The A5 is 15-20 km/h faster than the A3 across the board, if you close the cowl flaps completely, and some 5 km/h slower if you open them fully. On the autumn map I found, that I can fly and fight for quite a long time at combat power with the flaps just 20% open. On emergency it overheats after a couple of minutes, with is acceptable. On combat power, I have not yet found need to open the flaps more than 2/3 even on the summer map. The A5 represents a nice incremental improvement over the A3, but the main attraction is its much better ground attack capabilities.
216th_Peterla Posted March 1, 2017 Posted March 1, 2017 I'll try yesterday the A5 with dual gunpods mod just couple minutes but in a single burst I put in flames a Pe2. That thing is fast and deadly. Mi IL2 will have serious troubles encountering with this bird.
Finkeren Posted March 1, 2017 Posted March 1, 2017 Obviously any plane finding itself at the business end of six MG 151s is in massive trouble. On my first QM test I downed 5 Peshkas. However, the performance hit is pretty substantial unlike with the MG-FFs, so you should not bring the 6xMG151 to a dogfight.
US63_SpadLivesMatter Posted March 1, 2017 Author Posted March 1, 2017 (edited) 6x20's are going to be popular. They bring the speed down to 505/522 @300m though if you're not using the U17 mod. Edited March 1, 2017 by hrafnkolbrandr

I have no doubt we'll see a lot of them at first, with people trying to BnZ from 5K like they do with gun-pod 109s, but hopefully people will wisen up. Having the extra guns doesn't just chop your top speed but your climb rate as well, and unlike the 109s, the 190 doesn't have sich a huge advantage in climb rate, that it can afford to lose some.
Guest deleted@50488 Posted March 1, 2017 Posted March 1, 2017 Hmmm, can one close ( manually ) the cowl flaps in teh A-5 ? Thx for that Finkeren! I didn't notice... Will check at the flying PC :-)

The new skins look amazing as well . Especially the Schlg1 skin called Panzerbar. Grt M
=EXPEND=CG_Justin Posted March 1, 2017 Posted March 1, 2017 Can we get some screenshots of the skins? This work crap is really cutting into my sim time.
6./ZG26_Klaus_Mann Posted March 1, 2017 Posted March 1, 2017 (edited) Closed Cowls resulted in 588 on the Ground for me using U17, did you fly with them open or closed? Also: 500kph while carrying 700kg of Bombs (more than Il-2) is truly astonishing. Edited March 1, 2017 by 6./ZG26_Klaus_Mann

6./ZG26_Klaus_Mann Posted March 1, 2017 Posted March 1, 2017 Closed. You know that you have to also press the Boost Button to get 1.65 ata?
Blutaar Posted March 1, 2017 Posted March 1, 2017 Hey, yesterday i tried out the 1.65ata, did anyone can tell me how long it should be usable, i did just one test and after a bit over 3 mins i got the exceeding emergency time limit warning and did throttle back?

US63_SpadLivesMatter Posted March 1, 2017 Author Posted March 1, 2017 (edited) You know that you have to also press the Boost Button to get 1.65 ata? Thanks sherlock. Yeah, I used the boost in all tests. Are you measuring ground speed or airspeed? I'm not getting anywhere near 588 airspeed. Though it also appears that I am only pulling 1.6 ATA with emergency plus boost for some reason. What's missing? Edited March 1, 2017 by hrafnkolbrandr
curiousGamblerr Posted March 1, 2017 Posted March 1, 2017 So when are you supposed to use the boosted ata? Just in case your heavily armored FW gets approached by fighters and you need to run away? I'm sure in game people will use it whenever they feel necessary, I'm just curious about the historical intent of the boost. Also had no idea the new FW had manual cowls... that's a big change from the full auto A-3! Very interesting.

I also was suprised about the cowls. Anyone know why they did that? Grt M
Blutaar Posted March 1, 2017 Posted March 1, 2017 In my knowledge they did that because you couldnt control temperature it was allways max cooling, with the installation of the "Kiemenspalten" pilots are able to control temperature via these cowls precisely. If im wrong im sure somebody can explain it far better then me.

Correct, it was meant for 190s to get in, hit their target, and then escape at high speed before enemy fighters could properly react.
JG13_opcode Posted March 3, 2017 Posted March 3, 2017 What's the optimal radiator position for cruise, and for combat?
