smink1701 Posted February 19, 2017 Posted February 19, 2017 In SP with 10 planes in the air over Stalingrad summer map I was getting 30 FPS with everything maxed. Then I went into bin/game and launched from the IL2 and not the IL2 launcher on my desktop and now I'm getting 60 fps. Many of you may have all ready discovered this but for those that haven't, give it a try. Don't know why it makes such a difference but it did for me!
Field-Ops Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 Do you run a x64 bit operating system? That would be a good reason for the FPS jump.
smink1701 Posted February 20, 2017 Author Posted February 20, 2017 Yes, running windows 10 64 bit ... but why the low FPS from using game launcher vs IL2?
216th_Jordan Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 Yes, running windows 10 64 bit ... but why the low FPS from using game launcher vs IL2? I have never experienced this. Very weird. Did you test it again? Could you make a video showing the effect?
deWaardt Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 I don't have a particularly fast PC, I'll try this when I'm home to see if it has any effect on my PC. I doubt it though, I don't see how launching IL-2 without the launcher makes it run better. Does it even run without the launcher? Doesn't the launcher function like DRM or something?
Bando Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 The launcher (launcher.exe) starts the same file (IL-2.exe) the OP does manually. Maybe some parts of the launcher stay in memory and thus causing a slow down when the game is started through the launcher.

If one has even a half-capable PC, the couple megs of memory plus the two and a half CPU cycles the launcher uses shouldn't make 30fps difference.
Riderocket Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 In the launcher it has a seed when downloaded option, disable this to make sure your game doesn't upload files while playing the game. This is probably why some people get lag and others not when using the launcher.
Elem Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 You got my hopes up there Smink. I get similar FPS to you so I tried this trick and it did nothing! 30-37 FPS as before. I find the Seed when Downloaded is no longer unselectable. I uncheck it, then when I look again it's come back.

Move IL-2 out of Progam files, this location is a common issue for games Cheers Dakpilot
Elem Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 Move IL-2 out of Progam files, this location is a common issue for games Cheers Dakpilot It is Dak. I don't install any games/sim in Prog. Files.
Dakpilot Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 It is Dak. I don't install any games/sim in Prog. Files. That is odd, I have not had seed when downloaded issue, am able to turn it on and off and it stays where selected Maybe try change in Start conf. and then make it read only.. or contact support, this should not happen Cheers Dakpilot

smink1701 Posted February 21, 2017 Author Posted February 21, 2017 I have the game files in my E drive and not the normal C...if that has anything to do with it.

Check your startup.cfg file ( game folder/data ) and see if the following is shown at the end of the file. [KEY = updater] enable_udp = 0 language = "eng" locales = "rus, eng, ger, pol" p2p_port = 6881 seed = 0 web_distribution = 0 If not, you may copy and paste the above at the end of the file and save and see if this fixes the problem. To be safe, of course backup your startup.cfg file just in case . This was my problem as I had said and this fixed it. Cheers --sf--
GSP_Hund Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 I tried this and got the same boost (Win64bit), originally I was getting 30-45 FPS when using the launcher, switched to the il-2.exe and was running 80-90 fps on TAW server. Thanks for the "little known trick" smink1701!
Blutaar Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 Wow i need to try that, not for the FPS ingame but for the FPS in menu.

I tried the OPs little trick again but that still didn't do now't.
Blutaar Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 Ok, started without launcher but menu fps looks the same, ingame i dont know, was never an issue and i think without sparse grip supersampling the in menu fps are much better, at least caped at 60 like the game itself.
Feathered_IV Posted February 22, 2017 Posted February 22, 2017 I'll have to give it a try. I always use the launcher exe out of habit, but have quite low fps when in the hangar and looking at maps. Even a little boost would be pretty welcome.

TG-55Panthercules Posted February 22, 2017 Posted February 22, 2017 Just tried this for grins, but did not detect any difference - running at an in-game-indicated 165-175 fps both with and without the launcher.

SCG_Space_Ghost Posted February 22, 2017 Posted February 22, 2017 Wow! You must have a super-computer :-) Or he's playing at a subprime resolution. With a 1080 you could easily approach a couple hundred FPS @ 720p.
szelljr Posted February 22, 2017 Posted February 22, 2017 Hi,what IL2 launcher?? I have DServer exe,IL 2 exe,and Restarter exe....Steam version.
TG-55Panthercules Posted February 22, 2017 Posted February 22, 2017 (edited) Or he's playing at a subprime resolution. With a 1080 you could easily approach a couple hundred FPS @ 720p. My monitor's native resolution is 1920x1080, so that's what I'm running (with "ultra" game settings but HDR and SSAO turned off 'cause I don't like them on). And I had turned off v-synch (even though I usually run with it on) as part of some testing I was doing a few days ago. I'm going to go back and set all my v-card settings back to my normal/standard routine and see what happens. [EDIT] Turning v-synch back on in the game's settings dropped fps down to 140-145, but again it was the same whether I used the launcher or the .exe file to start the game. And this is just a QMB single plane free flight over Stalingrad Winter map, so presumably it'd be lower if more was going on. Edited February 22, 2017 by TG-55Panthercules

On my hardware @ ultra, SSAO on, HDR off, FXAA through NVCP and supersampling through NVCP and I'm getting 90-130FPS.
Blutaar Posted February 22, 2017 Posted February 22, 2017 I get 60FPS with Ultra settings without HDR and SSAO, no distant grass (wish i could turn it completly of, its ugly), 4x landtexture, 4x AA and through nvidia inspector 4x sparse grid supersampling, in MSI Afterburner i set powerlimit to 60% which hold my temp at 60°c and downclock 90Mhz. This way i get stable 60 FPS, with FPS cap on of course, and it runs at 60°c, why do i tell this, just because i wanna show how good IL2 is optimized, only the menu FPS are not that good and the cursor feels slugish. Why 60 FPS and that downclock stuff, its economic and i never need more than 60 FPS, why should i waste more energy for no effect because i dont see any difference between 60 and 144 FPS and 60°c is awesome, at 70°c i start to feel the heat under my desk and i hate it.
