Let's say the objective in "Mission 5" is to launch and sink carrier A. In order to make the scripted campaign progress in a logical and believable manner, I as the mission maker have to know/plan if that carrier get's sunk or not. Otherwise the next briefing might not make sense, the next mission might not make sense. This poses a problem obviously. Now if there was a branching functionality, whereby if the 'mission success' condition was met (in the case the sinking of carrier A) then the campaign progresses to "Mission 6" If the mission fails, the campaign branches to "Mission 5_B" or whatever the designation is...in this case maybe another strike is launched to sink that same carrier. The pre-determined mission naming convention might be what determines where the campaign goes next. Success utomaticaly to the next mission, fail to the _B version or similar. Success on to "Mission 6" Fail on to 5_C, etc. (probably after the second fail I would just script in that someone else sunk it and get on with the campaign, but that's beside the point) Maybe there's a limit to how far it branches before coming back to "mission 6", maybe that's just one mission...I have no idea. What EXACTLY this functionality looks like is less important than some version of it being implemented...if possible/feasible. In my opinion the benefit of this functionality will more than offset a modest development expense as it would radically improve the scripted campaign mode in a fundamental and useful way - especially for Midway where a carrier getting sunk or not will play a huge role in how the campaign unfolds. Otherwise we can't write/script it properly without resorting to a few cheats. 2
