BlitzPig_EL Posted February 24, 2017 Posted February 24, 2017 Carrier landings in a storm or rough seas? That would be a nightmare. Generally in a storm/very rough seas there would be no flight OPs. The WW2 carrier aircraft were not "all weather" like modern jets seem to be.

The WW2 carrier aircraft were not "all weather" like modern jets seem to be. Read Eric Browns account about his time aboard the HMS Audacity. Some did have to do that. (Yes, define "storm".) And for landing he had about 80 yards before he would hit the barrier. He was very fond of the Martlet.
216th_Jordan Posted February 24, 2017 Posted February 24, 2017 (edited) A propos... Edited February 24, 2017 by 216th_Jordan 1
Scojo Posted February 25, 2017 Posted February 25, 2017 A propos... I tried landing on barges in QM the other day. Took me a while. I got ran over a lot when overshooting the landing lol
Fortis_Leader Posted February 25, 2017 Posted February 25, 2017 well yeah but if you get back to the carrier and winds have picked up and the carrier is rocking over swells, you still have to land IIRC I heard/read some current USN pilot address that. His response was that flights aren't planned so that the landing will take place in too bad weather (and storms and the like aren't exactly hard to predict for them).
hames123 Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 Back on topic, in CLOD, did people sort of do a FNBF thing and gather up and bomb London/Dover together?
Scojo Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 Back on topic, in CLOD, did people sort of do a FNBF thing and gather up and bomb London/Dover together? I think that's "Storms of War" in CloD, but Storms of War was more heavily based around Squadrons taking part in the campaign instead of individuals signing up. I may be wrong though
No601_Swallow Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 Back on topic, in CLOD, did people sort of do a FNBF thing and gather up and bomb London/Dover together? If I recall correctly, most buildings in CloD don't have a DM or hitpoints, or a "wreckage" model. You can mark bomb-drops in other ways, through scripting to generate smoke, etc, but it's quite difficult unless you're good at scripting in visual basic, etc. My squadron once landed (or tried to) on the Mall, but we mostly steered clear of London (partly because it looks so unlike the city itself).
PatrickAWlson Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 A propos... Arresting gear works perfectly
unreasonable Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 People could always Bomb the Reich using this.... http://www.awargamersneedfulthings.co.uk/2017/02/b17-pc-emulator-here.html
Ace_Pilto Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 Heck no. I'm Danish, That explains a lot. The most brainwashed country in all of Europe. https://www.youtube.com/embed/dDBKjyM-W5o
Pupo Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 You can mark bomb-drops in other ways, through scripting to generate smoke, etc, but it's quite difficult unless you're good at scripting in visual basic, etc. This is correct, but the scripting language is C#. ClOD "may" be bad, but it's not visual basic bad... Back when I was fooling around with ClOD scripting there was a very effective script being used with just around 20 lines that detected bomb impacts within a certain area. It was then possible to deactivate airfields, spawn craters and smoke after a certain destruction level was reached.
Frequent_Flyer Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 I would love to have a B 17, despite what said above it was a good sturdy plane that took a lot of punishment. The design and control surfaces did not allow more than 60 degrees bank, but you never wanted to do that in any multi crewed aircraft. It was a good plane to fly over the channel, safe to ditch in water and ground. The B 24 carried more bombs , but it was not a plane you wanted to ditch in, all though there are films on youtube showing good ones, even worse to crash land in. But I think we just are to few, I would be perfectly fine with B 26 Marauder and B 25 Mitchell a Betty Bomber and JU 188 DO, 217 K , Sunderland , Catalina . I can do with these The Germans and Russians fought a unsophisticated tactical airwar. Small formations, flying to the end of the runway at low altitudes to attack a couple of trucks. Their fighter escorts were again small slow and short ranged. You won't get much traction here, they just do not understand strategic long range bombing. Hell the Luftwaffe were using the Ju-87 and 110 till the end of the conflict, both were obsolete by the battle of Britain- in the West.
