1CGS LukeFF Posted February 13, 2017 1CGS Posted February 13, 2017 Just chalk it up to the idea of "American schoolbus" which seems to have led the development of this plane in IL-2. What?
BlitzPig_EL Posted February 13, 2017 Posted February 13, 2017 We'll see how the P39 works out, but yeah, I get what Venturi is saying. Look at the comments on how people use, or don't, the P40 as modeled currently. It's a lot like the FW 190 was before it's aero qualities were changed, that is, a brick. The real thing was quite maneuverable and only looked bad in this regard when compared to the fly weight Japanese fighters it faced in Asia. 1
6./ZG26_Klaus_Mann Posted February 13, 2017 Posted February 13, 2017 I'm kinda torn inbetween, considering that it is an Overweight Aircraft, it is 1 ton heavier than the F-2 but has the same Power Output and Less Efficient Prop and less Torque etc.
Venturi Posted February 13, 2017 Posted February 13, 2017 (edited) What? You know, the descriptors of the plane when it was released. "Americans like their planes large and comfy" "Much larger fighter than all others in sim" "Much heavier fighter than all others in sim" Here's some facts: Weight, P40E1 loaded - circa 8300# Weight, P51D loaded - circa 9200# Weight, F4U loaded - circa 12000# Weight, P47D loaded - circa 12400# Length, P40E1 - 32' Length, P51D - 32' Length, F4U - 34' Length, P47D - 36' Wingspan, P40E1 - 37' Wingspan, P51D - 37' Wingspan, F4U - 41' Wingspan, P47D - 41' Edited February 13, 2017 by Venturi
Dakpilot Posted February 13, 2017 Posted February 13, 2017 Last time I looked there are no other large and comfy P-51D, F4U or P-47 in the sim When there are they can also be called large and comfy, but also deadly with enough HP But seriously, compare the size/weights of similar year 109 E7/F2 or even Yak -1 Cheers Dakpilot
Venturi Posted February 14, 2017 Posted February 14, 2017 max continuous hp/# P40E1, 1150hp, 0.14 P51D, 1490hp, 0.16 F4U, 1625hp, 0.14 P47D, 2000hp, 0.16
unreasonable Posted February 14, 2017 Posted February 14, 2017 Venturi, you are just proving that the "large and comfy" generalization was correct! Compare the P-40E with German and Russian fighters in the sim, and it is indeed large: the other US types you list are just enormous! Find some data that shows that the P40 E is under-performing and submit it to Han. These generalized complaints will do nothing to alter the plane in the game.
Cpt_Branko Posted February 15, 2017 Posted February 15, 2017 (edited) Test documents are a matter of paying about a hundred Euros and waiting for a month. The team can do that themselves and show everyone - look, our model is right. As for aerodynamic qualities, we're talking about an airplane which stalls at a critical AoA which is just not believable. If you get that wrong, then the whole polar is wrong. 3d wing will always have a higher critical AoA than the 2d profile, so from where does 14 degrees come from? Of course the P-40 does not have decent power to weight when restricted to military power (takeoff improves matters slightly and should be usable for 5 minutes as per manual, but well), and without that sustained turn performance will not be stellar even with a good airframe. Instantenous turn performance is quite significant for fighter maneuverability though, and there is no chance of the fighter being fairly represented if the basic data doesn't make sense.
