IL2 Cliff of Dover now very good!

Hi,

Honestly, i never had great interest in this sim because of known problems at first...and couldn't run it smooth as many here.

That certainly was old story!

Because in the waiting of BOS different sessions, i re-installed it on my new rig, got TF4 patch running, got SweetFX installed and adjusted, downloaded Desastersoft campaign + Florist dynamic campaign, and have to say i now have great fun flying it!

Very very nice, and immersive!

Even with max 120 planes set in Florist campaign, sim remains very fluent...can't believe it!

Sea rendering is one of the best i've seen, huge map and so detailed scenary, FM really improved by TF, as well as so many sim details.

Planes sounds are very nice too. Only remains the AA issue, quite tuned down with SweetFX + Nvidia adjustments though.

Great fun and practice in the waiting of BOS sessions

I really don't regret to gave CloD an other chance on my PC...

Wing badly damaged, i lost the use of my left gun...hoping to see this kind of visible damage in BOS as well!

Forgot to say about campaigns, Desastersoft is well named...impossible to get a successful mission. Way too hard imo.

A shame because it's very well made.

But Florist dynamic campaign is quite fun, and i wish BOS could have same kind of SP dynamic campaign, with AI skill adjustable and random, mini/max planes adjustable etc...!

I too have fallen in love with the new CloD. I had thought the game was hopeless upon initial release but TF has really done a magnificent job in getting everything in order! And with the new TF 5.0 patch around the corner it's going to give BoS a run for it's money.

Very nice screenies BTW. The new coloring gives it so much more depth now. Absolutely wonderful  :)

Yes, hats off to Team Fusion guys!

To anyone who doesn't own or has never played Cliffs of Dover I say this: Get it! Seriously! For the price it's too good to miss out on. And besides that it's about the best practice you can get in while awaiting BoS to go live.

Also modding up to TF 4.0 was very simple. Theres some very good instructions on the ATAG forums....

New CloD lover here too. Everything looks great with the mod on. 10 bucks is a steal.

I didn't realize at first I spent 2 hours on my first online sortie at ATAG server.

Very nice pictures! The landscape looks so much better than any Clod pics i have ever seen. Is it because of some new patch or just your SweetFX/nvidia settings? I see you already listed both but i'm curious about which makes this huge difference?

Posted

Hmmm....

Maybe I will give it a try.

I had it installed since the release but never really played it.

Just recently I've updated to TF4 but did not play.

What is this SweetFX and where do I get it?

Yes it comes from SweetFX. As for ROF, it greatly improve all details and screen is cristal clear. But it takes quite many tries to get the right setting in there...result is worth it without FPS impact at all!

In fact, i'm using the application made by Gaby Laser for ROF, called FlightFX.

It include the SweetFX and you can adjust things with sliders instead of tweaking the file itself!

Designed for ROF, it works for any game. I use it for CloD, DCS and BOS as well (though i gave up for BOS actually, can't find the right settings for all that white snow landscape)

CoD for the win... great game and like it lots

Does SFX work just as well with ATI cards as it does with NV cards or is it only for NV?

Works fine on both.

Also the improved "look" isn't just due to SFX. TF has improved the ground textures, cloud textures, ect.

This is the one I use. I'm actually quite satisfied with it to be honest. I tried messing with settings a bit but really couldn't quite get it any better than this. This will at least get you very close!

These are the best looking screenshots of COLD that i have ever seen, could you share your exact settings Fifi?

Indeed, Cliffs of Dover TF4 is a whole new sim, and absolutely incredible. For the offline players there is an issue with the AI lawndarting, however that will be fixed with 4.01 which will be out in a couple of weeks.

Even more exciting, they are beginning work on TF5 which will have a new map and new flyable planes.

I myself am having a blast with it!!

Actually CLOD with TF 4.0 has for me the biggest immersion in air combat from all sims i have played. I never experience such realistic and immersion combat between fighters.

Engine managment is very realistic in the air, planes are flown by the real life manuals, there is no more alone hero action against all enemies ( like it was in old Il2). Now if you alone you have little chance to surive.

Nice graphic, beautifull and photorealistic cocpits, very good flight physics in the air, historical performance of planes based on RL data and online server with even 100 people flying.

Actually CLOD is the best sim for play and fly.

Thanks for posting this!

I got CloD when it came out (Collectors Edition), and was so disappointed. Looks like it's finally time to give it another go. Well done modders!

Ah what could have been, so sad people couldn't be just a tad more patient.. :(

Just look at those cockpits, they really do just blow BoS out of the water...

I write here the same I posted on the other post, IMHO

My opinion is this.

I,ve been Fliying Cliffs of dover since the release, hours and hours, just founding new things even today, a really stunning simulator, that gives you a really good inmersion and some of the best moments I had infront of a Screen.

The General Grahpics are nearly Draw.

Cliffs of Dover uses Really impressive textures, but lacks of AA and post effects. Bos uses new and not so new Technology that enhances the visuals and its realistic. the cockpits are really better looking in Cliffs of Dover, but in Boss are more 3D alike. Matter of taste I think, you cannot compare two simulators. (I prefer Clod ones)

seeing what is happening, would suit me towards Bos, is having a great initial acceptance, even before hiting the market, which the Cliffs of Dover had not at the time, and despite the epic efforts of Team Fusion I think Clod it will not recover the confident of the community.

Many people come 1946, many community expects a good simulator, many of these people have not tried the Cliffs of Dover with all their details and opportunities, but Bos is a step from 46, without reaching the Clod.

I think its better  a firm step than two insecure.

Taking this into account, and that is very likely to have many online community on its release, the expansions will come, along new aircraft and features.

The Clod is the best simulator, but this does not mean that it has/ will have a concorde acceptance of what is, and preferably I prefer sacrificing buttons to maps, aircraft, community and technology.

Its a Shame, but we cannot change the past. Only do a Brighter future.

Sorry to be late...

Ingame settings:

496452Sanstitre.jpg

Nothing in Nvidia control panel, nor Inspector...but it seems all is in SweetFX file:

COD_SweetFX_settings.txt

On side note, i don't mess anymore with Inspector/Nvidia panel for CloD. It doesn't improve anything, except maybe when using global settings of panel (but it affect whole computer programs, not only CloD)

Rendering is very nice on my system, but it might be different on others!

I've checked out CloD after hearing the great things that people have been saying about TF mod.

And in fact, a major gripe that I had with CloD, i.e. spotting difficulty, is 90% fixed. I can actually spot contacts now :) and that's a big plus. Aircraft FM issues appear to have been mostly resolved. So, if you're into online play, CloD is very very good right now, thanks to TF work (although ATAG is the only server where you can find players. Other servers appear dead, at least I never ever saw a single soul in any of them).

On the offline play front, however, CloD remains less than impressive. The AI is still abysmal. In TF 4.0, 10 out of 9 AI will lawndart (particularly BF109s. Spits fare better for some reason), although TF is said to have fixed the problem and will include the fix in 4.01. At this time, I'm using 3.01 because of AI lawndarting issue.

And this is not the only problem with AI. They tend to follow you into the ground when landing. And you have no way of sending them on their way, back to base, since Radio is 80% dysfunctional, and 100% useless.

FPS is great on my mediocre PC. And it looks awesome. No argument there. Surprisingly, anti aliasing issue is less of an issue now. It still does not work, but the game looks very good all the same.

Bottomline, I'll certainly keep flying CloD until BoS final comes out. Before the TF mod, I wouldn't touch CloD with a 10 foot pole. Kudos to TF for their great work. Two thumbs up.

In SP, have you tried the Florist dynamic campaign on top of TF4?

Here you have access to AI skill level mini/maxi (1 to 9) at start of campaign, and setting it on high numbers seems to give you quite nice AIs...

Just had a nice fight with my Destroyer ME 110!  :)  Got fuel tank hitted and had to break for home, but managed 3 kills nonetheless (one might be from my AI gunner, i'm not sure)

Playing without icons is a blast   (before TF i just couldn't) and had at least 80 planes involved on the map (i set max to 120)

But i agree radio is almost useless actualy (maybe TF could fix it later on) and we can't order RTB.

There are other servers, but they tend to be more 'campaign' squad orientated. I fly in a large BoB campaign every week, and there are at least two other large groups that I know of that does the same sort of thing. Some are squads vs squads, others squads vs AI.

Its like in il2 '46, theres a lot of organised stuff that goes on that people don't see if they just fly dogfight servers. There were hundreds of players in the old online wars every night that you would not even know existed, because you would never see them in a dogfight server.

I certainly have, with original CloD without TF mod. I've read on ATAG forums that the lawndarting issue could not be solved by adjusting AI skill levels. But all the same, I will  reinstall EF dynamic campaign and try it with TF 3.01, and see how it works out.

The AI is still abysmal.

Tips to "coexists" with this AI.

Ignore then. :)

They tend to follow you into the ground when landing.

Is because AI only land in airfield set in mission, on Squad reverse order, first #6, then #5...  If you are the #1 need await all others landing first.

Due this, If you try land in another field, or try land first, they try stay in formation and crash.

In both cases, if you are #1 and want land first, just at start of final leg, order "Far formation", they spread out leaving you landing solo.

After you touch down they dont "see" you anymore, and landing normal.

If you are #2 or up, you can landing without tower order, between two AI (they landing "per book" done a wide circuit), without problems.

The tower never authorizes you land (or takeoff) unless in the sequence sequence pre-defined in game engine, set by mission.

And you dont hear tower denied message because some "radio" files are corrupted (they have only 4 or 5kb) in size, case of "Landing_denied".

If want, you can "fix" these broken radio messages making copy of "Negative1" message and renaming for "Landing_denied" (and "Takeoff_denied"), same for "Attack_my_target", use "Attack" file.

Voice files are accessible to player, in folder Samples. Are other cases of broken messages ~35/40 per actor, but these are the more evident.

Other thing related AI that improve the game experience is change your loadout in missions for one without tracers, so you dont see  "garden hose"  stirred around - sometimes you order AI to "Atack my target", they dive and "Got that hun".

The MOD team focus in more in MP aspect of game...  so for better SP experience wait the BoS campaign. ;)

Then definitely wait for TF 4.01... It fixes the lawn dart prob so redux will be more enjoyable and will include the dynamic campaign.

Yeah Fifi, Good Call.

Clod really does look good with the new TF patches.  Gameplay is sooooo improved.  The new maps are off the hook too. Autumn is my favorite.  I just flew some again.... WoW.

Exactly my feeling.

Thanks Fifi, really enjoying this.

It basically means I can fly all week long if I want to.

Now that's good news.

So true. Its sad that even now that TF have proven that the CLoD engine is a great achievement people still talk about not trusting the original creators.

And what you are wondering about?

Look at DCS WWII (RRG Studios forum). Always the same happen like before. No feedback of the creator regarding development and rewards!!

I don't know, dev blog 22 ( 6/12/13) has images of the Jug pit and early 262 wire frame images.
