This topic is for detailed discussion of this post.

Issue Type: 2

Edition: Pre Release Edition  One

Topic: Sample Missions And Groups For FME Manual

Issue: They won’t open

Details: When I try to open a sample mission I get the message “Error reading file,” so I went to the missions in the game itself and tried to open them there, with no luck. I then went to where there are screen shots of the sample missions in the manual. “Attack  a Defended Factory” on pg. 125, as one example. I was hoping there might be some info there on how to open it, but no luck. I went to “Sample Missions and Group,” on pg 7, but that was no help either. On the “Groups,” they became available in the library and I could place them in the view port,  but they were “inanimate.” As an example, the “Damage Display Switch;” when I clicked on say one of the timers to get properties, nothing happened. Its not clickable. I’ve spent two nights  pouring through the Manual , which I already had printed out and bound in a note book (all 300+ pages) and was unable to come up with a solution.

Thanks for posting the issue Victor_Chevic. Sorry, I neglected to update the sample missions after a recent update to IL-2 Sturmovik that required resaving missions. I'll post updated sample missions as soon as I can [DONE 2017-01-30].

In the meantime, you can fix your copy of the sample missions. In the editor Tools menu, choose "Resave All Missions in a Folder", navigate to the folder where your sample missions are located, and click OK.
This is covered in "Cannot Open a Mission in the Editor" on pg. 180 of the manual.

Regarding the sample group that you placed in the View Port, you need to make the group the current working group (pg. 25 in the manual).
Also, see "Cannot Select an Icon in the View Port" on pg. 182 of the manual.
Note that the Object Library "Group" category can include the following types of items:
- Groups (object, MCUs, and other groups; a group is represented by a group icon in the View Port)
- Non-groups (objects, MCUs and other groups that stand alone in the View Port and are not represented by a group icon)

"Chapter 13: Troubleshooting" is a good initial place to check when something goes wrong.

Thanks for the tips, they not only fixed the issue mentioned, but also helped me solve a few more I hadn't mentioned. I thought they were just "bugs" that I would just have to accept and learn to live with.

When putting a new mission together I like to save it under a new file name, before making any significant changes; that way, if I totally screw up, I can go back to just before I made the changes and not have to start over completely from scratch. The new file names would just be something "quick and easy," like "copy a, b,c," etc, with no description. When I get it all done and am satisfied with the results, I save it under an appropriate name with an actual description and delete all the preliminary copies and that's where the problems came in. Most of the time, depending on what final name I gave the file, when I tried to run it in game I would just get the message "error reading file" and the same thing if i tried to open it back up in the editor. Sometimes I would spend half as much time coming up with a name the system would accept, as I would putting the entire mission together. I need not mention the amount of aggravation it caused.

The "Resave all missions in a folder" part cured that problem, once and for good.

Also, I'd like to add, by being able to watch the sample missions, in the game and then go back to the editor and study how they were put together, has enhanced my understanding of how it all works , more in one night than in the entire two weeks I've been struggling to figure it all out. I'm the type that has to learn things "hands on" and without practical experience, even half the explanations in the manual were beyond me. I'm finally getting to the point where it's all starting to make sense.

Thanks for the help.
