unreasonable Posted January 25, 2017 Posted January 25, 2017 After a few months mostly grounded I have started playing again using Juri's very nice Yak scripted campaign. (Or should I say scripted Yak campaign....) The game now runs so smoothly, control seems easier: is it just my imagination? AI behaviour looks more logical, bomber gunners are not freakish, and so on. Anyway I am having a blast. The only area I am struggling with (apart from being shot down by 109s) is the AI commands. This partly just the ergonomics of going through a menu system while trying not to lose sight of some distant contact, and partly because I am not sure which ones are working, or what the limitations are. Has anyone come up with a streamlined way of using these commands that gives good results?
Finkeren Posted January 25, 2017 Posted January 25, 2017 Yeah DX11 made things super-smooth, even on my 5 1/2 year old system it was even better in the first 2.006 version, but unfortunately driver issues with some Cards forced them to revert to some "safer" (and therefore slower?) shaders in the hotfixes, which took the top off the performance gain. Still a very big improvement. As for the commands, I simply memorize them like: Tab-F2-F1-F2 = attack freely etc. I did the same for the original IL-2 and it worked fine, though sometimes I did have to actually look at the menus. A cheat-sheet next to the keyboard might becan idea? For the 5-6 most-used commands I can give an order in less that 1 sec. It's not a great system (and I think the menu takes up far too much of the screen) but it's better than RoF and it serves its purpose. 1
unreasonable Posted January 25, 2017 Author Posted January 25, 2017 Trouble with keyboard is that the way my "cockpit" is set up the keyboard is positioned to my left at 90 degree angle to usual place. Makes typing into chat impossible in MP - (no loss since I have given it up) - and finding anything except Space a bit tricky. For RoF I hot-keyed them to F1 - etc , so I might try that for the most common commands and leave the menu for odd things. I can usually get these by feel. Camera views will have to be altered, but that is no problem since there is no time pressure. I used to use a program called VAC (voice activated commands) for IL-2 1946 - it worked, but sometimes with hilarious results.

I think a program like 'Voice Attack' would be perfect for giving wingman orders. It would be very immersive too. 1
unreasonable Posted January 25, 2017 Author Posted January 25, 2017 Thad, quick look at the webpage: that looks very much like the VAC I used to use. Takes quite an investment of time to train the program, plus requiring a mic etc, not sure that I can be bothered with all that again, my floor is already covered with cables. But if you are already into Teamspeak etc then it could work well.
unreasonable Posted January 25, 2017 Author Posted January 25, 2017 (edited) I suppose part of the trouble is that some Soviet ones did not have radios, or they did not always work, so it should not be too easy for them.... edit In RoF commands are by hand signals or flares of course, so it makes sense that they are limited and only affect planes that can see them. Playing the Yak recently I actually did not mind so much that some of my flight failed to attack a bomber formation - I suspect that was probably realistic. They are novices according to the briefing. Why did I not think of using the arrow keys for formation commands? Intuitive and easy to find - thanks Pinko Although given that the formation following in BoX is much worse than in RoF I am not sure that it will help much. I think I will try a few hotkeys and ignore the menu system for my next few sorties. Edited January 25, 2017 by unreasonable
SAG Posted January 26, 2017 Posted January 26, 2017 "training" VoiceAtaack only really takes like five minutes and is great for what your looking for, what might take a bit longer (no longer than 10 mins) is assigning what your VoiceCommands will do, for example: Tab-F2-F1-F2 = attack 1
unreasonable Posted January 26, 2017 Author Posted January 26, 2017 I shall give some thought - will be upgrading PC to move to 4XHD soon, maybe that will be the time to add VA.
Dakpilot Posted January 26, 2017 Posted January 26, 2017 I shall give some thought - will be upgrading PC to move to 4XHD soon, maybe that will be the time to add VA. Totally off topic, but most of the current 4k Tv's (as you said that was what you were interested in) also do 120Hz native when used in 1080P If you have a card to do 4k justice you also have the option for high refresh rate This is probably one of the best sites for no nonsense info on TV's as monitors and for gaming http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/by-usage/pc-monitor/best Cheers Dakpilot
unreasonable Posted January 26, 2017 Author Posted January 26, 2017 Thanks Dakpilot I shall check out the TV site too - right now I am on a o/c 780: works perfectly for BoX at 1080p with the new DX11, but I plan to upgrade that too, I know it will not be able to deal with 4xHD. Family commitments took up most of my energy and income last year: this year it is toys for boys time! 1
