HTC VIVE VR run with same rudimentary DX11?

I bought the HTC VIVE VR and was running the same SIM being rudimentary (test),

But after the update to DX11 stopped running and this message appears:

Fullscreen mode is not available

DXGI_STATUS_OCCLUDED

Would anyone have a solution for me to continue running the SIM with the VR?

Even being rudimentary?

Wow! I loved running with HTC VIVE VR and now I can not ...

I'm sad and disappointed ...

I think they turned it off as its not ready for BOS yet. I have the Vive so I'm waiting too. Until then there is DCS.

Yeah That too, I don't play that one though so I didn't think to mention it. If BOS,ROF and CLOD would go VR I'd never leave my house or the chair at my computer desk..and thats silly because with VR I don't need to sit at a "desk". :)

...we'll probably be in elderly's wheelchair before BoS have VR support!! ;-)

(And then, we still won't get VR, because "It's Oculus fault, they dropped Dx24 support!!!")

Why the bitterness?

The devs have kept their promises. They needed DX11 to be able to support VR (particularly the rift) and they delivered.

They promised us that by the end of winter there will be support for VR. I have no reason to believe they will not hold their promise.

All it takes is some time.

Have some patience.....

Bando, take it more as gentle irony than bitterness! (But of course, I would have appreciated that VR support be a priority directly after Dx11...VR support was already teased 4 years ago, isn't?! 4 years of patience before posting is not bad I find!)

They brought the game to Dx11 in a very short amount of time and now they are working on real VR Support, as well as Kuban and FM of long released planes like the 190. We're getting great updates rgularly with big changes and improvements.

VR Support was promised for the end of winter and I am sure they'll make it happen, as they always have.

So in my opinion, they've earned much more pacience and a little more appreciation for us  ;)

Reason for it not working is most likely that they have not focused on quick fixing a solution that will not make it into the DX11 port anyway. Much better to start working on a good implementation of proper direct mode VR.

I think we need to take a step back and try looking at this in perspective, guys. Having a good implementation is important, and it takes time.

Dropping support for DirectX9 is reasonable due to the limitations of the API. It was just a shame that this game at the time used DX9. And yes, maybe it would have been more future proof to start porting the engine when development started many years ago.

But:

Sometimes unforeseen situations comes up. Especially in game development, where one production depends on so many individual bits, by so many different parties.

Being disappointed to the extent that one feels the need to react with bitterness and irony seems to me a symptom of unrealistic expectations. No matter how much work you do on a development plan, there will be issues. I have never seen a development process that has gone 100% according to plan. Hell, I have never even seen a revised plan mid development that has gone 100% according to plan. In any production I have observed, or been part of.

And just to be clear, I am also waiting for VR support. And I am in the situation where I have problems motivating myself to play without playing in VR. So I am right there with you. But please, be rational and try to have understanding. Or else this thread will be yet another in a long line of bitter threads, with no constructive purpose other than venting off steam.

Feel free to disagree and challenge my view on this. I don't know what the developers look on the situation is, but I respect their work a great deal and understand and accept that we are where we are. Development is hard, and gamers are the toughest crowd of all.

Since a few time, almost each two day an user drop a new post asking for VR support, wich is also a symptom. Each of these post is important to remember that implementing VR support is not a "fantasy for a hype device", but an important step for the present and the futur of this sim. Each time an other sub-feature (actually modelisation of water for Kuban) gets more priority and postpone VR, the gap grows, and the soft burry itself. The last 12 month, the early relative lack of complete VR games should have been a boost for BoX, but this opportunity has been lost due to a different choice of priority. I regret that, and wich this time they really take that train.

Indeed it is a symptom, Znarf. A very important one as well. I believe it is being taken seriously. But a speedy release of a limping implementation will hurt the product.

Also, as far as focus is concerned I would say that going off schedule in game content production would be worse for the popularity of the game. It is a bit of a tradeoff. Where to allocate the resources?

And the developers have shown us that they do focus on VR. They have just finished porting the entire engine to the required API, while keeping up content production if form of new environments, aircraft and core game play changes in the single player department. No small task, for a team this size!

As far as the VR hype train goes, there is still time. The VR market is growing, but still largely dominated by smaller titles. Very few of these are flight sims. Even less are combat sims. And I've got a feeling that VR support is fairly close.

You're right, let's hope that VR got soon the attention it deserves! Next months will also bring their lot of surprise (large FOV and 4k/8k headset like Pimax, NVidia VR-algorythms to drive all that efficiently, acceleration-feeling device like Entrim 4d... sounds bright for us, simmers!!)

Indeed! And there is interesting stuff happening in form of touch controls and hand tracking too. We could see a new way of doing clickable cockpits out there soon. Or should I say touchable cockpits! I am optimistic for the future of this tech. Just got my Oculus Touch controls before Xmas, and I am having a blast with I Expect You To Die and Arizona Sunshine. So intuitive.

Quoting myself (https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/26991-vive-support-dx11-update-not-working/?do=findComment&comment=431756)

I'm managing to make it work, although is a bit of a hassle.

- Direct mode disabled in SteamVR settings.
- SteamVR closed
- Il2 Launcher window in the Vive (Winlogo key + Shift + Cursor left/right allows to move the current in focus window between the displays)
- Vive display set as primary.
- Start the game (if the launcher has the focus it can be launched hitting 'Enter')
- It will launch SteamVR compositor and fail to run the first time. You'll have to alt-tab to bring the error window to the front. Acknowledge the errors.
- Launch the game again (alt-tab to bring the launcher to focus and hit 'Enter'). It should work this time. At least it does for me most of the times

I don't know if it happens to others, but in my case head tracking feels as if only a few updates a second are being done to head position, which may induce vomit in seconds to people not used to VR. Still, I prefer to put up with that than flying on a monitor. Really looking forward to proper VR support, though.

I went through all the hassle because, being new to BoS, I didn't know that VR support was considered a broken feature. I didn't even know there had been a recent update to DX11. And there you go, in my ignorance I made it work, sort of.

Me too!! When my Touch arrived, despite beiing used to VR, I tried the incredible Oculus VR Touch demo and said to myself "Okay, a revolution begins"!!!

I can wait for it..I'd rather have it be right then "oh it works if you do XYZ and turn this off..blah blah.. work around". As good as the game is now VR is just going to make it that much better for those of us who have VR! 80% of my Helicopter squad in DCS run VR. Only the ones that have full pits and Helios touch screens don't. Its the way games here on out will be built, with VR in mind IMO.
