Bearcat Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 Declassified gun cam footage from WWII More footage: http://youtu.be/CT4P9Lbl0E0 I don't think I have ever seen DMs modeled quite like this in any sim.. good .. but not like this .. especially the ground explosions.
71st_AH_Hooves Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 IM really hoping that the devs consider a "GUN CAMERA" view. This game just deserves it, SO many good movies can come from such a view. Not to mention its historically accurate to have this. (well I dont know if the VVS had it, but still) 2
=BKHZ=Furbs Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 I don't know if some of the footage was slowed down but some of the approach speeds of those staffing runs looked pretty slow to me.
Mags Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 Nice find. Some of it was new footage, at least to me. At 6.28. Left plane. Does it go down as well, caused by the explosion? A sort of friendly fire. I wonder how often that happned?

(well I dont know if the VVS had it, but still) I had suggested this in il2 '46 UP version..ehh I forget. It would be nice to have a gun cam that would record when you fire and save it as a short video you could look at, save or delete. That would help show me where I'm hitting and if I'm hitting. I know I could just track the flight/fight but I'd like something that is set to record when you fire only and aimed at the point of your convergence range. Deflection shots might be hard to get on film but that was true IRL too.

=AVG=Zombie Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 On the link at 4:50 there is a scene you can see two people running and bullets dropping all around them lol.
smink1701 Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 Yes .... would love to see a gun cam feature. Also, I don't think I've ever seen a CFS that really captures the violence of a plane or the earth being ripped apart by concentrated MG / cannon fire. If memory serves IL2-1946 did a pretty good job modeling the bullet hit flashes on a plane. And I liked the way a landing gear would drop on a crippled plane in CLoD. I've seen that in gun cam footage too. I hope the developers really bring some new, gritty realism to this aspect of BOS since guns and damage modeling are the key elements that define a combat flight sim.
Rjel Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 The segment at about 6:25 has always intrigued me. Some versions are so blurred that you really can't be sure what happened to the leading aircraft. Others it looked like the plane simply folds up in the explosion. I've done some research and I think I can identify both the airplane and it's pilot. On August 26, 1944 the 361st FG was strafing an ammunition train near Perl, Germany. The pilot, whose gun camera we are seeing, was Lt. Wood of the 375thFS. The pilot whose plane was caught in the explosion was Lt. Sherman Armsby flying a P51B 43-24761 nicknamed Jacqueline on the left side and Parvela on the right. Sadly Lt. Armsby's plane went down as a result and he died in the crash. This loss was one of only two 361st A/C lost on this day. The other also went down with it's pilot during a strafing run. I'm pretty sure these facts are correct based on several different sources but if anyone has other information I'd like to hear it. At least after watching that clip for nearly 30 years, I can now be certain the plane and pilot were lost. Hopefully if my facts are right, we now know who he was.
=38=Tatarenko Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 (well I dont know if the VVS had it, but still) Yes the Russians certainly had guncams but generally not built in to the a/c but as a small bolt on pod that looks like a horizontal tear drop. Google images hasn't been much use but you can see one mounted above the cockpit in the first picture here: http://les-avions-de-legende.e-monsite.com/pages/les-chasseurs/les-chasseurs-sovietiques/polikarpov-i16.html

Now thats something i didnt know TY!!
MarcoRossolini Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 It's interesting considering that people want little sprites of people running everywhere all over the ground yet in all these shots there is a total lack of people... Also, it's amazing how close to the ground some of those aircraft are flying at.
kestrel79 Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 the footage around 1:40 amazes me. It's so clear. Most gun came footage is shaky or blurred from ww2 but this looks very sharp.
t4trouble Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 just because you cant see the stars in day light doesn't mean their not there check the first video 4:47 any one notice the guy bailing out at 1:17 lose his cute in the 1st vid
FlatSpinMan Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 Great to see. The amount of damage these clips showed inflicted by guns alone is quite surprising. Wouldn't it be great to have these kinds of effects for certain ground targets?

Wouldn't it be great to have these kinds of effects for certain ground targets? +1 I highly hope (and am confident) that the devs use such material as reference when it comes to creating both, the look of tracers and damage effects on planes and groundtargets. Would also be awesome to have some variance when it comes to explosions. Correct me if its not right anymore but i think the explosions in ROF looked pretty much the same every time. Hope this gets improoved here.
69th_chuter Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 That API sure makes one heck of a flash at impact.
