FW-190 Flap Suggestion

Nonsense, the way they are actuated doesn't change their Working Principles. Is my Motorbike an Automatic because it doesn't have a Gear Shift Knob?

Toldya you would be in denial. I was in a denial too.

TIPTRONIC. Is it manual or auto... it has a knob.. works like a knob... has flywheel... but no clutch to 'feel' the grib of the engine.

If you argue pedal shift, tiptronic is a manual, then f1 is manual. Ok

Automatic:

-Torque Converter and Planetary Gears

-CVTs, normally based on Belts and Bevel Wheels and with Centrifugal Clutches

Manual:

-Mechanic Clutch and either

  • Synchromesh
  • Unsynchronized Constant Mesh
  • Crash Box
  • Draw Key Gearbox

In otherwords f1 machine gear box is an auto.

That's a F1 Clutch

And this is the Trannie, no Planetary Gears here. Just your Run of the Mill Gearbox

Isn't the constant-speed propeller in an 190 (and most other WW2 aircraft) 'automatic'?

Real men fly aircraft with fixed-pitch propellers. And rotary engines. And no throttle. :P

Real Men fly without engine. And pull all the girls.

Short of the unnecessarily long: yes.

Nope, it's basically a Motorbike Transmission, electrically instead of pedally actuated. But the Working Principle is that of a Synchromesh Gearbox. NOT AN AUTOMATIC.

Automatic means: Engine --> Torque Converter (Fluid Coupling Device) --> Set of Planetary Gears, Clutches and Bands --> Output

As well as CVTs.

One thing that my journey through college taught me is that basing an argument around semantics generally doesn't validate said argument.

Short: nope, why do they need a clutch to pull away then?

by any definition, if it needs a manual clutch and does not change gear on its own, it is not an automatic, they do have a semi auto seamless full throttle capable sequential gear change though

You could get away with calling an F1 gearbox a semi auto..

........but it would still be wrong

Are modern performance Motorbikes with a quickshifter called an auto? nope

I'm thinking of this an Amateur Mechanic. When someone tells me he has an Automatic I expect to find a Torque Converter and a Planetary Gearset. Imagine my surprise when I find that he only has a Sequential Automatized Synchromesh Gearbox. It makes all the Difference. It behaves differently, and it a completely differenty System, it is more economical but less smooth than an actual Automatic, because it's in essence a Motorbike Gearbox with a Servo instead of a Foot Shifting Gears and Actuating the Clutch. It has nothing in common with a Proper Automatic.

The Smart ForTwo for example.

Equivocation is the name, I believe. There are a few nuanced fallacies relating to semantics, and I'm no expert, but I think that's the one... I'm not sure why I'm back in this thread, informal fallacies just get me excited I guess... and since we've abandoned the topic at hand days ago, why not?

I would agree with Semi-Auto as well. Seems to be the Best Term.

I like melon and prosciutto on rosemary and olive oil Triscuits.

How about we just say "Thingy", I mean, who needs to be Precise anyways. It's not like we're trying to make meaningful differentiations.

You've reminded me I have some prosciutto and taleggio in the fridge!

Good man. I see somebody who knows how to enjoy the finer things in life.  ;)

I was precise - melon, prosciutto, rosemary, olive oil.

That's what it takes to get things done around here.

PSA: This thread is now about fine foods. Fw190 flaps < sports cars/transmissions < gourmet tastiness.
