I feel ready to reveal my next big project which is my brand new Ju 52 4k template. Pls keep in mind everything below is pretty much WIP before you're continueing.

What has been done so far:

- setup of basic camouflage / civil airline pattern (WIP)

- reworked alpha channel to get nicer reflections on courugated surfaces (results can be seen in screenshots, I'm pretty satisfied with it!)

- finer panel lines (WIP)

Skinpacks:

Luftwaffe: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/27358-ju-523m-g4-skin-gallrey/?do=findComment&comment=443225

Foreign: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/27358-ju-523m-g4-skin-gallrey/?do=findComment&comment=443961

Edit: Topic will be repurposed as a skin showcase thread

Really nice.

Hats off - that's photorealism and very nicely done pictures. If 777-studios (hopefully, there's still a great gap after MS-FS) come up with a "Airlines 1938 Simulator", they now have the pictures to start with!

Now this is just the begining of what will be a very time consuming project so there's still a lot of stuff missing. I'm waiting for a detailed book to arrive which will hopefully make it easier recreating this magnificent bird with all it's little details and accurate markings.

Pls note I will not have enought time to continue on this until mid Feburary due to exams.

Hope you like it and stay tuned for more in future!

PS: Pls use spoilers to hide the images when quoting this post! Thx!

Good work.

If you allow me a secondary critique, your screenshots look like there's a form of post-process sharpening going on, or perhaps they're downsampled. If that's the case, for a more faithful representation of your work, vanilla screenshots would be better.

I have setup Nvidia inspector with 8xSGSS and ingame AA disabled, which might cause the jagging in some of the images (it's not bad when zoomed in or when the picture is in motion). Will test how it looks like without it.

Just to rule one thing out, the screenshots have been taken driectly from the game and not post edited in a graphic program.

I was actually thinking SweetFX/ReShade (LumaSharpen and the likes), but it might be because of SGSS. And to be clear: I don't mean to degrade your work at all, mine was just a minor observation :salute:

A couple of shots to show what the military variant looks like as for now. Just like the civil version this is WIP until I can commit enought time to finish it.

The final template will include markings and schemes for both variants as well as seperate alpha channels for each of them (more details on that later).

Found a little bit of spare time to touch up the weathering. Not much else for now since I still saved up onthe laborous part for when I have more time.

Thx. I will be working on skins for the 52 (and also the Ju 87) once the template is completed.

At the moment it is at 40-50% state.

Quick update: With todays update I though I'd test the new possebilities of 4k normal maps. One of the main issues of the 2k normal map was that if you looked carefully you could see squarish artifacts along some of the courugated metal caused by the lower resolution. In comparison, these are the results with a quickly made 4k normal map:

Normal map editing will also enable me to implement details with 3d effect like screws, rivets and bumps, which previously could only be painted on the skin. The downside though is that it will be applied to all skins including official ones and that it will take more time to complete the project. My plan is to eventually settle for a compromise of reworking parts that eed it and leave the rest as it is to not screw up too much on other skins.

Wow, looking good 5tuka, the panels really appear corrugated. :salute:

Btw, I like the way you are explaining what the Maps do, thanks.

Stunning work 5tuka, big thank you for your efforts. :salute:

Very impressed! I look forward to seeing all the potential of the bump maps!

The benefits will be mostly about small details but the improvements are significant. It also means I can get rid of some of the work arounds I had to use previously to get "fake-3d" effects.

Here's another quick shot of further bump map works:

Note the depth effect of the screws, rivets and the batterd ends of the corrugations.

Note2: This is much closer than you'll ever get to see it with the ingame camera.

I know its not a big thing that most of you already know but its nicer for pics..
You know you can turn on Anti Aliasing for the Viewer.exe So its all nice and smooth (looks great Like below)

c7ZP1Cn.jpg

Just make up Nvidia control panel profile
Add Viewer.exe to a profile set it to max detail and turn on FXAA.
X:\Games\IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Moscow\bin\viewer\Viewer.exe

... i might make this a little PSA

Having more working capacity now I began redrawing the panel lines. This proved to be difficult due to the lack of good refferences (if you have any high resolution blueprints you could share with me I'd be more than happy).

Also I tweaked the normal map further to enhance the corugated metal and included some other little things. Unfortunately this is hard to show off in a screenshot since the effect becomes more noticeable in motion with changing light but it still should be fairly visible.

Last a few screenshots with a test skin (which I'm going to release later on).

Excellent ! And (IMO) the best metallic effect on a BoS/M/K skin so far !

Very nice!

On the metallic effect that already existed in ROF, I asked Jason about it and he said it's doable they just need to tweak something that changed on an engine upgrade.

If I recall correctly Han said in a Q&A that some Russian modders had already achieved this on their own.

There is no "metal effect" ingame as such because that basicly requires PBR. The game itself has the ability to render matt and glossy surfaces which is what the Alpha channel is there for. Another "trick" that can be used is baked in lighting in the texture itself by artificially highlighting areas that would reflect strong light on the skin itself. It can look quite good if you balance both well but still it's more or less a workaround.

While I'm busy compiling the template and applying finishing touches I've prepared some test skins. One is a civil variant while the other is the default ingame skin recreated in 4k. I'm also hoping to gather some feedback on artstyle and performence (espeically in MP) before releasing the template.

The download includes both skins, the custom normal map and a backup. To install it extract the graphics folder into your IL-2 Sturmovik\data directory.
