My rig is in my Sig.

What differences should I see using SSAO and HDR with it as I have buggerised around with both off, both on and one or the other off and on and I am buggered if I can see any difference?

In my case, i5 2500 and GTX 960, enabling this only contributes to lower FPS and more difficulties glimpsing distant aircraft. I always turn both OFF because I also don't like the HDR effect.

As far as i know hdr makes more realistic lighting and ssao is for shadows directly on objects like aircrafts and all that.

I do like hdr but it makes spotting harder aswell...

This is software hdr - which make image less darker.

Not being rude but wiki rules.
SSAO - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_space_ambient_occlusion

HDR - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-dynamic-range_rendering

But to cut a long story short.
SSAO does a much better more convincing job of shadows cast by objects in direct relation to their multiple light sources versus global lighting.

HDR is just a type of rendering with better contrast and clarity but can have issues.

Hardware hdr would be nice to see but it has to be supported by monitor electronic circuits and software game engine, todays implementation significantly add input lag unfortunately.

The term HDR has different meanings in video, photography and computer graphics. Most recently Ultra HD has "HDR" which is different than the "HDR" in the game menu. It is an expanded color space in the video signal. That has to be supported by the graphics card, monitor and cables.

Monitors like these or any new 4K TV are "UltraHD+HDR" capable

Thats a different HDR and thats not what the game has it just uses software based HDR.
Like what was pioneered in Half Life & Half Life 2 By Valve

HDR: High dynamic range. Makes dark hings look darker, bright thigsnlookbrighter. Makes lighting look more realistic but reduces visibility in environments that uses both dark and brihgt areas in the extreme range. Generally accompanied by automatic 'exposure' changig (increases the intensity of lightig or gamma in dark areas for example, when most of the screen is lookig at something dark, like a cockpit wihout lihting)

SSAO: Darkens sinificant concaved corners and edges neara a backgriund, geneeally assisted with its own shader (i think, or is actually just extremely low resolution when rendered), giving a shimmering effect when turning the camera or when things move, especially on older SSAO supported renderers such as OpenGL 2.1. Imo it doesnt makenthings look more realistic but it helps you make out he outline of somethignin placed in front of somethigof thensame colour..

Specular: Stuff drawn at a very slant angle loses its unique colour and blends in wjth surroundig ligts combined with itself, albeit brihtest where directly reflectin from the normal angle. Example: Hold your hand up in the air with a light in the distance. The edges of your hand are a bit whiter and lose their "skin colour" at the edges near where the light bounces off the most.

Thanks for the responses gents. As I cant see any difference, but reading responses I may get reduced frame rates, methinks I will untick them both.

I am really wondering how you don't see a difference between HDR on and off, for me its HUGE. Strange...

I do agree to the very small change with SSAO on and off.

No the game now uses a different version of SSAO with DX11 (dx9 ssao does not work with 11)

also even dx11 hdr is different i think

Me too. On my screen the difference is very clear, I always use HDR.

I like the cockpit shadows as well so SSAO is on.
