F/JG300_Gruber Posted January 19, 2017 Posted January 19, 2017 So, Now that Dx11 brought some major improvements in the fps department, I am considering a custom built computer to finally take advantage of my 4k monitor (my laptop not being able to keep up at such resolution). With Dx9, the advices were that an i7/GTX1080 was almost mandatory to get a smooth framerate at 4k. I'm looking for a solid 60fps in most situations. Is the statement above still valid, or does an i5 6600K paired with a GTX1070 will get the job done with the last update ? I'm usually a suporter of the "go big or go home" mantra, but the upgrade to the 6700K/1080 is an additionnal 400€ to an already "big" bill. My bank account may not survive this. I would gladly hear your toughts/experiences on the subject Gruber
coconut Posted January 19, 2017 Posted January 19, 2017 I don't think there's a relation between CPU power and resolution. Most if not all of the increased pixel surface to cover will be taken care of by the GPU.
Dakpilot Posted January 19, 2017 Posted January 19, 2017 To an extent the more powerful the GPU you need a balanced CPU to feed it, with 4K you will be running any GPU hard so a reasonable CPU will be needed At present I am running 4K on an overclocked 3570K and GTX970 (see specs in sig) with Ultra and 4X landscape and far grass, no AA FXAA on in Nvidia I get high/mid 40fps taxiing with solid 60 at wheels up In 8 Vs 8 Stalingrad summer City cloudy 1000M generally solid 60fps with the occasional drop to mid 50's in clouds/smoke of explosion etc. my setup is very playable but on the ragged edge of performance for 4K (and could always drop some settings) 2 X AA s possible and still will give mostly 60fps but particle effects have larger impact Your equipment would be more modern so you should get better results than me, there is very little benefit from i7 over i5 I would go for new i5 7600K Kaby Lake and GTX1070 should be ok, but if you can suffer the price a GTX1080 will be better and allow more graphic options to be turned up/future proofing Cheers Dakpilot
F/JG300_Gruber Posted January 20, 2017 Author Posted January 20, 2017 Thanks for your feedback Darkpilot. Good to know that the 7600K is available, I completely overlooked it's release. It seems that your 970 is keeping up pretty good at 4k. Playing at 2048x1042 at the moment (high, 4x landscape and 2xAA, nothing else), my fps is in the mid 50s at best with an average around 40fps, and sometimes down to 20fps in crowded places or on the ground. So even your setup will be a major improvement on mine . Seeing some benchmarking, the 1070 seems in average to be able to provide twice the framerate of the 970 so it may be more than enough for what I'm looking for. My monitor can't go higher than 60Hz and I'm not a big fan of the fps hungry features like HDR and SSAO (sweetFX for the win) so not sure that I will ever take advantage of the extra performance of the 1080.

The 1080 is pretty sweet, though... Especially if you get lucky and can hit 2100MHz. In B6's scripted campaign I'm consistently getting 80+ FPS on the ground and I seldom, seldom go below 120FPS in the air.
SharpeXB Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 I ran some tests in this and DCS for CPU-limited situations and found no difference between 4K and 1080p. Those situations in BoS are such as takeoff with lots of other aircraft etc. That was back with DX9.

More than I need It seems that my hardware took the decision for me, my Saitek rudder pedals are starting (again) to give me troubles, not sure this time I can fix it. The 1080-1070 price difference is almost just what it takes to get a pair of MFGs pedals. So I think I will move in this direction. Thank you all for your input on the subject
