II./JG77_Manu* Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 "The best" is always hard to define. The 109 is of course the more modern aircraft with more performance (climb, speed). Doesn't mean you are doomed in the Spit. Spit turns better.
purK Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 I think this really depends on how far you'll be able to push the Spitfire's engine... nobody knows til they let us fly it.
BlitzPig_EL Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 In the scenario you describe, played out in this sim, the Spit is a dead duck.
Czar66 Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 With conservative engine limits or not, my money will be on G4.I'm a sucker for any early Spitfire and BoB theater of war but the Gs are something to be feared much more.
Wulf Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 Okay, we don't yet know how the Spit is going to be represented in the sim so we'll have to wait and see. However, despite the obvious performance differences between the two aircraft, a lot will come down to tactics. A Mk V should be highly maneuverable with a very good sustained turn and good weapons. In the hands of a competent pilot probably quite a difficult adversary and a very serious problem if the 109 pilot becomes impatient and decides to get into a maneuver contest. I'm looking forward to seeing how this goes.
Finkeren Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 The Bf 109. It's faster, it climbs better. 1
Cpt_Cool Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 I have a feeling it will be a lot like the BOM Ratta. The 109 should not try to turn with you, but they will.
JG13_opcode Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 A classic Energy vs Angles matchup. The Spit should do about 600 km/h TAS at altitude, and the 109 Gustav isn't so much faster that it'd be like fighting an Me 262. 2
ShamrockOneFive Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Really depends on what we get. The Spitfire Vb will be slower at all altitudes but the advantage isn't so dramatic and the Spitfire won't be too far behind on the climb rate either. It will have a pretty big edge in handling and particularly in turn. My guess is even money. The Bf109G-4 will be better and certainly the Spitfire Vb is the underdog here but I think in real world online multiplayer it will be disciplined Bf109 pilots scoring kills conservatively (as they already do against Yaks) and more average pilots giving up their advantages and playing in places where the Spitfire will shine (even in the hands of a more average pilot too).
JtD Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 IF the lightness of the Spitfire controls is going to be modelled the same way the relatively light controls of a Fw190 have been modelled right now in game, the Spitfire (and the P-39) will be nearly unflyable and the Bf109E will be a considerable challenge. The G-4 will be in a different league. The problem with the two aircraft is that they both have near neutral longitudinal stability, and that means that they'll stall with very little elevator input. Translated in game, this might be 20% stick travel, which is awfully hard to control.
BlitzPig_EL Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 The wing mounted guns on the Spitfire may prove problematic for some as well. It's odd, I always liked flying it in '46 and CloD, but my gunnery in it was not as good as I could do with my P40 or F4F. I do look forward to flying it though, it's such a beautiful aircraft, and always a delight to fly.
