Bf 110G-2 Excitement!

Per the rough timeline outlined in the special TS Q&A with the Devs last month, we should be seeing the Bf 110G-2 some time this month (if development is still on track of course). Is anyone else as excited as me? :dance: :dance: :dance:

 

 

Also, how about some friendly discussion about the in's and out's, pro's and con's, and even hopes and dreams of the real beast, and the beast we are getting ready to get in BoK? Maybe even talk about the differences between the E and G variants. :)

Very much looking forward to it. I'm really curious about the performance gain. Power difference between the E-2 and the G-2 is enormous. Then again the G-2 is AFAIK almost one ton heavier. Top speed at altitude is almost 600 km/h. Which is way faster than the E model.

I'm also wondering about additional armor protection. I would guess that the armored windscreen is standard now, but i think the option to add armor to the engines will disappear. The 37mm gun will be fun, but i have a feeling that it will make the plane really slow. And the extra 20 mm gun pods are nice but to me don't add a lot. Sounds like something for bomber hunting.

This is the performance I'm looking at as well. It seems that Messerschmitt loved the new horsepower with the DB605, but tended to cram more stuff into their air frames. The same thing happened with the 109 between the F and G series...."more power? Lets add more stuff!" What good is the added HP if you are just going to bog the plane down with extra weight? I cant wait to see what field mods they give us. From what I have read the G series was outfitted with the most Rüstsätze kits of all the 110 variants.

 

I think I am definitely going to love the speed increase though. When I go out attacking ground targets now, if I have no fighter cover it makes it difficult to egress once the bombs start going off and alerting the enemy of my attack. I usually get shot down promptly unless the enemy is busy elsewhere or my fighters are there to tie them up. That extra speed should us get in and get out in a hurry!

The plane is almost 1 ton heavier? Christ that's surprising. What the hell did they do to the airframe I wonder.

 

That is going to negate a lot of the DB605 power. Level speed will still be nice though.

First things that come to mind.

 

  • More armor for pilot and gunner
  • Heavier engines
  • More ammo for MG151 (Maybe the guns are heavier then the MGFF's as well. Don't know.)
  • MG81Z instead of MG15
  • More sturdy construction

The main weight increase is surely due to more default armor, as the role changed from heavy fighter to ground attack aircraft.

I would certainly make a big difference, but don't neglect the difference between the DB601 and the DB605. With both engines that already 200 kg.

The optional engine and radiator armour and windscreen add 260kg to the E, add in a bit more armour, heavier equipment and the two heavier DB-605 engines-plus minus 330kg dry, and it is not hard to imagine where the large weight increase can come from

I just looked it op in the dev dairy. 120 rounds of 20mm MG151 ammo weighs 29 kg. The G2 has 750 (350 for one gun and 400 for the other) rounds instead of the 360 of the E2. That's almost 400 more. That's almost another 100 kg.

i wonder if it will be released with a 4k skin template? maybe Jason reads this and can tell us? 

either way. i'm really looking forward to testing that 37mm on the TAW with a faster platform than the Ju-87 and more ammunition

I think this is unlikely. I thought I recall reading that if 4k templates are to be made, it will be up to the players due to time constraints with the dev team. I could be wrong though.

i though that statement was only true for existing planes that already have standard templates? i mean they have to create one for the plane anyway and it feels like a waste of time to make a "low res" template and wait for the community to upscale it

Although it has become heavier, it will also climb faster. I found some numbers for the climbrate. It says 8 minutes to 6000 m. If i calculate the Il-2 E2 numbers i get somewhere around 11,5 minutes. This is very rudimentary though.

This is only possible if the power to weight ratio increases. Surely an extra ton in weight negates the power increase of DB605?

If you calculate HP per ton with the numbers i posted earlier you will see that the G2 fares better than the E2.

It's basically going to perform similarly to a 109E-7 with pretty good manouverability still, and acceptable climb. 

 

For some reason I can't really hype, I think used all of it on the 52 and H-16 yet to come.

I am very excited about the 110G-2. I've had a lot of fun flying the E-2 model and it'll be nice to get back into the 110G-2. I had a lot of fun flying it in IL-2: 1946 and I expect I will here as well.

 

What a great pick for a plane in the Battle of Kuban scenario. A very versatile aircraft... heavy fighter, bomber hunter, possible tank hunter, ground attacker... It can do a lot and it gives the Axis side a fairly decently performing all around useful type for a pretty big variety of roles.

 

I will have a hard time sticking to Russian side when HS 129 , H 16 and 110 G 2 comes. Did we have a answer about the 37 mm gun pod? I had so much fun with that one in old IL 2

Should be great for tank-busting, another nice tool in the toolbox! Better 20MM cannons for intercept missions, hate the MG-FFs, they are OK for strafing or point blank shooting, deflection shooting I suck at using them.

Thnx for the data. Good to see that standardweight is "only" 7,5 ton, and not 7,7. That 700 kg more than the E model that we have in BOM. What i don't understand is the numbers for it's Vmax. Are those test in the manual performed with combatpower or with normal power. The data from the E model in the dev dairy is with emergency power. So one can not compare those two that easily.

An up-powered, up-armoured, up-gunned version of my favourite plane, what's that you say? A 37mm gun? EVEN MORE FAVOURITE PLANE. I'll continue to dream of the He219 til the end of days, and I'll always regret that the axis never made any further improvements on the Stuka, but the 110 G-2 will instantly and irrevocably combat-power its way onto the top of my flight list.

Just pray for no wobbling when firing the 37mm or its effectiveness will be greatly reduced. I hope a single cannon along the longitudinal axis can be pretty stable and consequently a real killer eliminating the convergence limitation like we have now in the stuka.
