Graphic options after re-install

Hi All, I have just installed Win 10 and done a complete re-install of BoS, although i saved then copied and pasted my settings back into the input file there are a few that have returned to default ?

I know that there are many options of preference in the graphics section, but i don't now enough about the following- Vsync, SSAO,HDR, and Antialiasing

The default has left me with Full Screen, SSAO,HDR, box's all ticked,  but VSync is not,  I'm not sure if this will make all that much difference

Resolution 1920x1080

GTX 980

8 Gig Ram

Cheers :salute:

you can tick or un-tick whatever you desire Jeff. Play around with them until you get a result you are happy with.

Thanks Pierre, Yes your right, its a matter of seeing what turns out the best.

I could have just said OP use google..  but im in a good mood today..

- Vertical Sync, Vsync is a display option found in some 3-D computer games that allow the gamer to synchronize the frame rate of the game with the monitor refresh rate for better stability. If the Vsync is turned off, gamers might obtain a higher frame rate but this action may introduce artifacts in the game.

- Screen space ambient occlusion (SSAO) is a computer graphics technique for efficiently approximating the ambient occlusion effect in real time.
(In computer graphics, ambient occlusion is a shading and rendering technique used to calculate how exposed each point in a scene is to ambient lighting. The interior of a tube is typically more occluded (and hence darker) than the exposed outer surfaces, and the deeper you go inside the tube, the more occluded (and darker) the lighting becomes.)

-HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. HDR works to balance the shadows and highlights of a photo so that neither are being favored or ignored. This is done by combining three different exposures into a single shot.

Anti Aliasing -

In computer graphics, antialiasing is a software technique for diminishing jaggies - stairstep-like lines that should be smooth. Jaggies occur because the output device, the monitor or printer, doesn't have a high enough resolution to represent a smooth line.

Hope this helps.

With a GTX 980 at 1920 X 1080 in Nvidia control panel (Manage 3D settings - Program settings tab-) for IL-2 you should be able to set

Texture filtering - Quality = Quality (default)

to                                     = High quality

For slightly better image quality with not too much performance impact on a 980

Only going off everything that went up after DX11 and my own experience

try Unticking full screen. Probably even more so if your screens native res is 1920 x 1080. That renders V sync unnecessary. Frame limited can be turned off to.

HDR - personal choice i believe-dunno if the effect is greater on monitors with their own

hdr capability.

If you use the Nvidia control panel ensure that your settings such as vsync match the in game "off" for the game profile.

If you used nv inspector and forced vsync (or anything), reinstall the driver and start stock.

But - as already said - play away!! :-)

Best of Luck

Vsync has nothing to do with resolution and running 1080P on 1080P Monitor does in fact  NEED Vsync the instant you are going over the monitors refresh rate (often 60hz)

this refresh rate has nothing to do with resolution its how many times per second the monitor updates its image in Hz in almost all cases specially on LCD's

YOU CANNOT Ever change the default refresh rate as this is physical hardware limitation and not a software one. also some ways to force it but often kills monitors if not instantly very quickly.

Unless you are using a very old system..

YOU SHOULD BE FORCING VSYNC IN CONTROL PANEL..(as this prevent 30fps in hangar and other game hardcoded locks)

As there is no advantage of fps over 60 fps if you only have 60hz monitor.

All you will get with Vsync off is 60+ fps and even more than 2 frames over 60 can causes disgusting terrible Tearing.

Tearing is when you can see the image on your screen update like a scanner from either top to bottom or left to right (monitor design)

1) I never said it did  - The reference to the resolution was simply made to highlight that the game and screen match as so it will appear as full screen not a window.

2) in windowed mode - Vsync has NO effect. Whilst you can turn on to limit and keep the gpu cool, it can introduce some lag

3) Turning Vsync off stops stuttering graphics in the hangar in my experience.

Hello Jeff.  Good to see you've got it all up and running again. :salute:

Don't worry too much about any advice using Nvidia control panel or Nvidia Inspector at the moment - that sort of stuff is best looked into when you are happy with how your basic games settings are running.

From my experience only - I run in 1920 x 1080 too -  you have two basic options;

Run the game in Windowed mode as Boo suggests with V-Sync off and the frame limiter set to unlimited.  With this TrackIr will run smoothly with no tearing and frame rates will go up and down but will generally remain high and the game will run smoothly.

Or

Run the game in Full Screen with V-Sync on  and the frame rate set to 60.  With this once again, TrackIr runs smoothly with no tearing but frame rates stay - mostly - locked at sixty and again, the game runs smoothly.

With your graphics card you should be able to run the Ultra graphics setting with AA set to four and the visibility/distant landscape setting on four in both these options.  I run with SSAO and HDR off in both these options as I'm not sure what - if any - effect they have on my game.  Your mileage will of course vary.

Before the DX11 upgrade I was happy to run the game in windowed-mode with v-sync off and unlimited frames.  After the upgrade I now run in full screen with v-sync on and frame limiter at sixty as I find it just a little bit smoother.  That's my personal preference.  Yours is a rather stronger video card than mine so that gives you more options :salute:

Once you're comfortable with these basic in game options then it might perhaps be worth exploring the more advanced stuff using Nvidia Inspector or Nvidia Control panel and utilities like SweetFX to enhance your game and make the most of your system.

Hope this helps :salute:

Thanks for the suggestion. I have not adjusted my Nvidia control panel 3D settings so I was wondering if there were other changes you would recommend? Thanks

I reply for those who may be having a similar graphics problem [ tearing or distorted horizontal line when moving head which is more prevalent when ii cockpit ]

I followed DD Arthur's second suggestion = Vsync [on] SSAO [off] HDR [off]

                                                                     Frame rate [60] AA [4] Landscape [4]

When i applied these settings there was a marked difference.

Hope this is useful for those first timers or those like myself resetting the sim after a change of OS and a complete reinstall of BoS

With my 780ti card I noticed I was getting some tearing while using my hat switch to pan around. Going back in the menu and checking the vertical sync took care of this. Also was getting some flickering with grasses at fairly close range. I believe there is a box too in order to check something like "distance grass". I unchecked it and the flickering stopped.
