JG4_Sputnik Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 (edited) I've recently started the "other" flight sim and noticed that the landscape visibility is far greater than in BoM. Which is great because I feel less like flying in a "bubble". I wish there was a way to change that. Is something planned in the future considering that issue?Cheers Edited December 30, 2016 by JG4_Sputnik
1PL-Husar-1Esk Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Objects visibility or lack of proper horizon?
JG4_Sputnik Posted December 30, 2016 Author Posted December 30, 2016 Lack of horizon. I find it ads a lot to the immersion if you can see "where you could fly if you wanted to". It's less a realism issue (for me) but it just "feels" more freedom-y. Hard to explain. But I miss it in BoS.
1PL-Husar-1Esk Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 As devs said game engine do not have build in proper horizon technology insted put haze in the distant - maybe someday they build proper rounding horizon.
JG4_Sputnik Posted December 30, 2016 Author Posted December 30, 2016 A flightsim engine without a proper horizon... weird.
Dakpilot Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 Have to say it does not bother me seriously There could definitely be improvements to rendering distance, but the horizon haze is not a huge issue, it reminds me of 95% of the conditions I experienced in RL It was a very rare day indeed to have a crisp horizon, and then only at certain alts In a DD they said DX11 allows the possibility of 4 X better map texture quality, maybe that will help Cheers Dakpilot 3
JG4_Sputnik Posted December 30, 2016 Author Posted December 30, 2016 Thanks for the info, I hope that will help Yes, haze is very natural, however, as I've said, it did bother me a lot in 46, and I'm not happy that BoS carried on the tradition. But well.
Blutaar Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 I feel i cant see the REAL horizon, it feels like arma, if you go higher the horizon shifts for the worst and if you are high enough you cant see anything, just fog (actually i dont think you can fly that high in IL2). I take Arma as an excample, normally you play this game with a viewdistance of mabye 2-4k because the game runs very poor on higher settings, CPU bottleneck, that of course can be changed since last time i played, its long ago, Arma still has a poor engine no matter what they change, IL2 on the other hand looks very optimised. In my opinion, the viewdistance sucks since day one and the render distance for stuff like houses, streets, trees and all that stuff is to short, the grassbubble in low flying is horrible same as the hightextureish bubble around the plane where you perfektly see the line which is surprisingly short for a Sim. I really cant understand that there is no slider or a setting which you can play with, why there are no graphic options, this is a game for PC and not a console and i dont care about other peoples performance and the resulting adventages/disadventages, i play offline and the multyplayer guys can have a serverside setting for that maybe if they want, so not a reason for me. I think this engine can easily handle more viewdistance because the performance is so great, i underclock my graphicscard and limit the frames to 60 because i dont need more power, with some settings like viewdistance this would of course change for the better. Dont get me wrong, i love il2 and did buy all the stuff in early access, you can see that under my avatar, i just want it to be better because i think its possilbe to have all that and for people with less performance nothing will change, this is what makes pc gaming so great, you can do so much settings wise.
ViKe213 Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 This is the big problem I have with IL2 bos/bom. Hopefully it is resolved at some point.
6./ZG26_5tuka Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 The glowy/bloomy horizon is unrealistic and also bad if you're flying up (will shift upwards and block level view). If I understood correctly Jason said he has intentions tackeling this issue but no promises could be made. As for the haze, it dpeends on specific weather. Taking central European weather as an example having 100+ km view distance (= distance at which a ground object can still be determined) is nothing unusual in hot spring / summer conditions while in winter it can drop down as low as 5km. Also worth noting is that strong light and reflections can brake threw haze revealing an object at great distance even if it's hidden by fog. Examples for such objects are windows, solar panels, cockpit windows and lakes. I have yet to see a game implementing this correctly though and I doubt devs have the ressources to go over ever graphical detail and implementing all those new feautures.
1PL-Husar-1Esk Posted December 30, 2016 Posted December 30, 2016 (edited) What i don't like in BOS is lakes from great distances because they look just like big blue spot - no reflection at all. Edited December 30, 2016 by 307_Tomcat
SuperCossack Posted December 31, 2016 Posted December 31, 2016 one of my main problems with BOS is the lack of definition in the horizon. At the higher altitudes it becomes quite disorienting and a bit claustrophobic and makes it difficult to maintain level flight without relying on instruments which is one of the main reasons i dont often fly above about 3000m.

Glass scratches are already fixed, so its one step closer.
Simicro Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 Hi, After 2 years of absence, and a period of time on DCS World, I'm back to IL-2. I was immediately struck by the fluidity of the sim but also by the limited (and not adjustable) visibility. I read several threads about rendering distance and I'm wondering if the devs care about this subject and if a decision was made to make the visibility distance adjustable?

Simicro Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 (edited) Oh! Great! Many thanks for the heads up, Finkeren It looks like I chose the right time to come back to IL-2 Our lead programmer and lead landscape designer were developing new stuff for a couple of months already: it will allow us to make the visual image of the sim drastically more realistic and modern looking in the next update. Their main task was increasing the rendering distance of the terrain almost four times, from 40 to 150 kilometers, and they completed it successfully. Edited October 20, 2017 by Simicro
