After newest patch - can I play with decent settings on my old rig?

Recommended Posts

Hi! Sorry for my english, is far away from OK! ...

I remember MicroProse F-15 Strike Eagle, I'm old :-)

After many years with IL2 Sturmovik (from the start) and few months with Rise of Flight I must ask for BoS...

I can play Rise of Flight with highest settings and decent Antialiasing, 30-40 stable FPS is good enough for my old eyes :-)

What about Battle of Stalingrad (and Moscow)?

My specs:

AMD Phenom II X4 965 (revision C3) - 3,4 Ghz

GeForce GTX 670 FTW 2 GB RAM

8 GB RAM

Windows 7 64-bit

Can I play with at least medium settings and some Antialiasing?

I don't need grass, but shadows and AA (FSAA or something) can be very nice to have. And highest planes/cockpits textures too :-)

Please, mayby someone with similar configuration can enlight me?

Best Regards and Happy New Year!

Hi,

With the latest update to DX11 Il-2 runs better then ROF. But i don't know if that's universal for all hardware and setups.

Agree with Martijn. If ROF runs good, this will also run good.

Posted

You should be able to run it smooth, even maybe with "high" settings ;)

Posted

As you got Windows 7 however, make sure to have Dx11 and the windows update, mentioned in 2.006 release notes, installed.

Posted

Your specs are decent enough. I used to have a 670 and it was a great card.

You won't max out the game but it will probably run better than ROF.

Thank You all! Good news :-)

BTW - what is minimum screen resolution? I cannot find this info...

1280x1024 will be ok? I have old LCD monitor :-)

Happy New Year! Great community!

At 1280 X 1024 you should be fine, this is one of the 'default' resolution to choose from in my settings

It goes down to 640 X 480

Hi Koci,

Try RoF https://riseofflight.com/ (free). If it will be ok I think BoS/BoM with 2.006 will be ok also.

should always use your LCD Monitors NATIVE Resolution which is also often its highest.

Eg,
17" = 1280 x 720P
24" = 1920 x 1080P
27" = 2560 x 1440P

Some monitors fall outside of this range too... But you're right, whatever the native resolution is, you should use that one.

My 24in monitor is a 16:10 aspect ratio so its 1920x1200 :)

I have a similar rig with an AMD Athlon x3 with one core unlocked to be as an AMD Phenom II X4, with a little better grafics card (GeForce GTX 960) so do i get 30-50 fps on high settings  after the patch.

So should be playable for you now.

i have X3 groundrendering distance on 4x the game start to stutter. Not the best looking game but playble.

Mate you know you are actually HURTING your frame rates running a GTX960 on Athlon X3 (as it will be bottlenecking the CPU)

You would get much better (50-60fps liquid) If you ran like a GTX760-780ti on that cpu (but even these cards really need a 4ghz cpu)

GTX9xx cards need a minimum 4ghz cpu with hefty PSU 800 Watt plus to pull full card usage and or power.

Pretty sure 9XX series card actually use less power...

Nvidia figures for  GTX 760 170W

                             GTX 960 120W

                             GTX 970 145W

                             GTX 980 165W

GTX780i is way higher performing card than GTX 960, if you say a 960 is too much a 780ti will compound that

not much of your post makes sense, I think you should check out your figures, recommending or suggesting  800W PSU for a 960 is just not really correct advice, a quality 800W would  run SLi 980's quite happily

Thats GPU cores Actual Power
It does not include the ram, the fans the other parts.
Nor does it include full clock cycles or room for overclocking or Turbo modes on non reference cards like Gigabyte,Asus,MSI,ASRock)

Look please do not post False info
OFFICIAL INFO FOR GTX980 FROM NVIDIA look at the last bit down bottom http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-980/specifications

Thermal and Power Specs:
98 C Maximum GPU Tempurature (in C)
165 W Graphics Card Power (W)
500 W Recommended System Power (W)**
2x 6-pins Supplementary Power Connectors

dxgiMhj.jpg

** This does not include Running the card at Maximum Power/performance This is only for a single card.
2 x GTX980 will Easily overheat and run 900Watt Gold Star PSU very hot

You have to remember a 1,000 Watt psu DOES NOT Push that power it can Supply it,.
If you only pull 500Watt thats all it will cost on power bill.

BUT!! A 750watt PSU running at flatout 500watt but nice and cool and not overloaded will last much longer than a 550watt PSU Running near max power or at max power and very hot.

Remember the life of an electronic component is based off Heat X Cycles over time.

Note:
You can run 2 X 980 on 700 watt PSU in SLI. But good luck seeing 99% gpu usage on both cards and good luck seeing 100% core power up
Not to mention lucky if you get 6 months out of psu running it at max load.

Dude because one 980 is recommended for a 500W (way off your 800W for a 960) this does not mean you need  1000W for two

Two 980's will not overheat a 900W gold star PSU

look at some reputable real tests of these systems

please turn down the hyperbole :)

interesting..

have you put a multimeter on the 12v 2x6pin connectors and measure the amperages?

Because my card has the multimeter test points built onto it.
Well over 35-40 amps under full load on a gtx780 SOC (running 1,050mhz core, 6,100mhz mem with 3GB Vram and 3 large fans)

12v X 40amps X 2 Rails = 960Watt MAX DRAW UNDER EXTREME LOADS>.

Please stop arguing

your GTX 780 is irrelevant to what you said

Basic power specs from Nvidia, comparing apples to apples

GTX 780  250W

GTX 980  165W

the basic point being that 9 series cards across the board in all cases use less power than 7 series  :)

Koci I had the same CPU as you and mine overclocked with a multiplier OC 3.9 to 4.2 no problem.  That alone would make it so you could game on a 1920x1080 monitor or TV with frames in the 40-60 range on ultra settings.  I have the rig still so I could look at bios settings  if you feel comfortable overclocking.  It is simple.

Just a comment on the side:

Gtx 700 series has 28nm transistor architecture. The new gtx 1000 series has 16nm architecture. The new card will draw considerably less current and have a lower power consumption than the old one.

Yes they will use less..

My whole entire point was..

THERE IS NO POINT Buying only a power supply just big enough to cover your needs.

There is NO downside to buying a PSU 25%-50% larger than you need (wattage wise)

Yes, but I can't. I tried, but (by the way) my Power Supply Unit have too little power, I need 20 WATTS more to overclock my CPU :-) and there is a problem with good BIOS for my Mainboard, You see - DFI Lanparty JR...

No problem, I can play old Sturmovik 1946 to the end of my life, but I will try Battle of Stalingrad (and Moscow) when it will be cheaper with some DLC's in collection or something. Now I have Rome 2 Total War (my beloved Carthage and Seleucid's), and Rise of Flight and Shogun 2 Total War and X Rebirth and... my Wife and my music (Yes, my hobby - i try to make music - electronic/soundtrack)...

Lots of work to do...

Thank You all!

Best Regards!

I'm sorry, just hope that each patch slightly improves the situation, but I'd rather be sure...

Each patch generally improves performance in the long run.

Best way to test is to fire the sim up and fly.

2.011 for me and others was a big performance improvement - really good fps.

Give it a try for yourself and see.

The series has mostly gotten better over time. AI improvements require less CPU power for the same tasks, the engine improvements have increased performance, and added performance sapping features like mirrors and sharpening are completely optional so if they cause problems you don't use them.
