Thanks for this nice campaign Samson ;)

Hello samson,

First of all I want to thank you for this campaign. In your mission I discovered Flack, Char, ... icons (see picture attached). I would like to know what the procedure for posted them in my missions.

Well, all those semitransparant pics placed on *.tactics "layer". More or less it described at pre-last developers' diary.
I used Adobe Illustrator to create those pics (I made silohuettes of planes, guns, tanks be tracing good quality photo images I found in the web) and frontline, and arrows.

I used art-director's guidelines and example given by developrs in the diary. (Colors and Font)

Then, I save this masterpiece as junior version of Illustrator (elder versions are not suited for Flash).

Then, I import these *.ai file into Flash and immediattly export this stuff from Flash to *.swf (you might think it possible to export direct from illustrator , but not)). And then rename dis *.swf into *.tactics.
Place it in correct folder (your campaign) and voila...

Thanks for the campaign Samson. I have enjoyed flying it very much and like the Russian music that completes each mission. Best Regards. ;)

Does anyone have any tips for mission 6?  Flying along with no wingman, 2 x BF109s attack from the right and literally swat me out the sky with their first burst every single time.  Frustration.

Well, that's it: you have to deal with those two 109s. I've just downed the skill of AI, so it should be easier to perform. Just redownload zip file from initial link.

wow thanks, I will retry later.  I hope the devs do something about the sniper AI in future.

I've now played all the missions and really enjoyed the campaign. It has made me put a lot of time into the Mig, which i still cannot land on rough without spinning out (game still counts as landing).

I only managed to complete the sixth mission through luck. I would be interested in what people think the best tactics are (if they even exist) for taking on two 109s in a single Mig, if you don't manage to stop 1 in the first pass.

I may be able to help if you want an improved English translation.

Yes, I would appreciate any contribution.

for me the key was to manage throttle so the air flow from propeller makes rudder efficient enough. Just push throtlle a bit after touchdown and keep hand on it.

Agree with Juri totally, so Shamrockonefive, you have a lot to play and to write with all the new campaigns and the ones coming shortly ;)

That should keep me busy for a bit! :)

Up next is Ten Days of Autumn and then we'll see what comes after that.

Really I have to recommend Cold Winter for being a lot of fun. Its certainly challenging at times. I would love to see some better English localization as I said in my review but otherwise its a good campaign and the Russian music at the end of each mission with a summary is a great idea. Something to think about as you're taxiing your MiG to the parking area. Great stuff!

Just finished playing Cold Winter and I decided I would start writing reviews of the Scripted Campaigns I play so here we are, my first campaign review: https://stormbirds.wordpress.com/2017/02/20/cold-winter-campaign-review/

In short, despite some issues with translation/grammatical issues, this campaign is great! It's a worthy remake of the original and a lot of fun!

Great stuff!  And thanx!!!

Samson, well done on the excellent campaign.  You captured the spirit of the original beautifully.

I have rewritten the briefings so that the English localisation reads more smoothly and attached them below.  I've been careful to keep it as close to the original Blinding Sun text as possible so that the original story and flavour remains intact.  I hope you find it useful!

Wow!
This is great news!!
Nice to see some interest to the campaign while I'm struggling through creation another scripted stuff. Likely it will be a campaign for German side (10 of 20 missions are ready to fly). Want to make it good enough to meet 1C and 777 standarts to make it sellable. Still hesitating about whether it worth to do (sellable).
Here are some "scetches" I made for "decoration" of the campaign (looks like it will be a "kachmarek" campaign for IV/JG51 during october-december 1941):

Good luck with your venture samson. I will purchase for sure should you be successful in your venture.

One request. Can you make it that the missions are successful as long as you land on a friendly airfield even if it is crash landing a damaged a/c? This is closer to real life situations.

Posted

Sure! New missions are all the way new approach either in criteria of success or in the structure, since the majority of them player will fly as a wingman. Some of missions take about 40 to 50 minutes and still you could be downed at the very end... For such missions success will be just to take off and stay in formation up to the first waypoint wich will be gained for sure since the leader is AI and never misses the point. Sorry... If you can read my English.

Thanks Samson, realism reigns supreme and makes for much less frustrating missions and campaign advancement.

First mission , really enjoyed it, shot down 2 planes, and landed, then got a mission failure message.

No idea why.

Any thoughts?

Posted

oops... sorry for that.

Just checked the mission in editor. Well, "plane landed event" triggers a chain of "timers" to deliver mission summary and there is no option - in a few seconds "mission complete translator" activated.
But still, proper landing ineeded. Not crash-landing. Sorry for that)
Good Luck next mission!

Hi

Jut plaid first mission of cold winter; attack with mig of tanks with il16 escort; my plane was shot and smoking. Aprroaching the base on flight back suddenly the game becomes very slow...freezing...as I'd lost many FPS. By other missions I haven't had that problem...I couldn't reduce throttle anyway...Is this a config because the mig was damaged? Thanks for answers.

Hi,

that happens to that particular mission from time to time. I'd made several changes in a mission then but haven't succeed. Sorry for that.

Can somebody give me tips for completing mission 3: Self Assurance?

I've flown it multiple times and cannot seem to find "the spotter" Is this a special recon plane I should be looking for?

There is a red marking on the tactical map for the spotter, but I can't actually find anything, except of course all the BF-109's that show up and shoot down my wingman, and ultimately, me. It's usually about 5v2 with us outnumbered.

I never managed to find any spotter. After endless circle patterns I returned to base where I was engaged by two Messers. The mission was successful though.

Maybe I can help. The Self Assurance mission is one of the easyer ones in this campaign. The key to survive is altitude! You need to fly the Mig at its strengths.

After start, climb to 4000-4500 meters and heading to square 1808. The Bf-110 with the 2 Bf-109 escorts will come from northeast direction.Circle counterclockwise a bit and you will see them around 1000m lower.

Now comes the tricky part. Dive on the Bf-109ers and forget about the Spotter Bf-110. IIRC the Messerschmitts skill level is set to medium/advanced,so its better not to have them behind you. Take care of your wingmen. You will need him. Shoot the germans ASAP. With a bit of luck you will spot 3 Peshkas on the same square, flying very low and get attacked by 3 more 109ers. Now its up to you to join the fight or lead your Wingmen southwards to your base. Prepare to get engaged by 2 agressive Bf-109. those guys want to see you dead,so better to fight them near your own Flak. After all, land your plane in one piece and have a cold drink.

If you (and possible your wingmen) managed to stay alive at this point, congratulations! you´re close to the Hero of the Soviet Union medal.

Fantastic! Thank you for all the work.

Was the "conversion" process from IL2 '46 to BoS difficult? It'd be great to recover some more of the old SP campaigns from '46.

(I have long-term ambitions to do a version of "Castaways" in BoS - slavishly copying the briefings and mission designs from the original campaign... With a little imagination, it might be possible... The player and the legendary Randy stuck behind enemy lines somewhere near V. Luki, perhaps...)

Yes!  That campaign was awesome and very enjoyable.   Perhaps he should get stranded on an island off Kuban somewhere in a PE2 instead of the original Beaufighter and it can be an A20 that joins him instead of the B-25.   The best campaign ever in IL2 (though I also enjoyed the sequel 'Bush Pigs' even though it had less Aussie humour)

A superb campaign, and loving every mission. I'm having problems with "Relocation" mission though. The lead Pe-2 will not lead. It just keeps flying in circles near the start and does nothing else. If I fly on without it and land that's a failure. Even flew the whole mission on Auto and it still did the same. How do I get over this?

Posted

How do I get over this?

If I understand correctly, you need to keep close to it (200-500m). He will make a circle and fly further. If you tear yourself away from him, he again stands in a circle and will wait.

Indeed, and moreover, Pe shoots flares while waiting. Though, there was a tricky moment at the very begining of the mission after player's take off, I do remember.

Should take a look at it)
