Thank You! DX11 = IL2 Finally Smooth & Responsive For Me

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Just wanted to say a huge thank you to the Devs for their DX11 solution.

It works wonderfully and I'm finally able to have a smooth and responsive IL2 experience.

I play at 8080x1440 and wasn't able to make the game go below 60 fps which is incredible compared to what I was experiencing before.

Feels like night and day compared to DX9.

A huge thanks again. Looking forward to many more great things to come.

Great improvement over DX9, congratulations!

Hope this success gives enthusiasm for DX12 with Battle of Midway release

The only minor thing I would say is that the menus are locked to 30 fps which makes them feel a bit unresponsive and at odds with the flying.

I do remember one build aaaaaaages ago that unlocked the menus to 60fps but this was then reverted for some reason.

But this is a very minor quibble.  :)

Holy hell it released?

This is amazing!

I'm very interested in how it's gonna run for me, I used to have ~30fps on medium settings.
Can't try until I'm home

There is a bump in the performance. I flew over Velikie Luki and solid 144fps VSynced at 2560x1440 maxed out. Sure no other planes etc. but still a big improvement. Will still wait before flying as can not stand the "circle of LOD" around the plane, too damn visible degrading the experience for me too much.

Can you describe to me this "circle of LOD"?

He means the visible border between different levels of detail visible on the ground, which appears as a large circle centered around your plane. It is particularly noticable with forests, where the trees go from being 3D objects to textures.

Most of us just accept it for what it is, but for this guy it has always been a dealbreaker.

Well, it can be a dealbreaker for more people.

I know some guys that do not play this sim because of it.

Try to fly the sim in a bomber at 10 km up and then find your target.

That's a dealbreaker if you're into level bombing.

All in all, the sim is wonderful, but I can imagine that for some it's not so much as it is for me (or for you Finkeren ;) )

Finkeren. Of course it is a dealbreaker as it is so damn visible. Game itself has pretty graphics and all but terrain rendering at distance just plain sucks. Not even in the "arcadey game" the LOD circle is this visible as there is no shimmering AT ALL. Yes there is this circle too, but farther away and blends better. OF course I am hopeful the DirectX 11 transition will help to improve this at some point, but simply can't stand a LOD circle in 2016. And the game engine has been around for quite some time, not a brand new invention. So I better wait it out for the improvement rather than just get peeved off by something so easily distinguishable that also causes problems, like bombing from high altitude etc.

Don't get me wrong Flanker. I absolutely respect, that this holds great importance for you. We all have our own priorities. Personally I'm more bothered by the way trees that are fairly close pop in and out of detail level at random, making forests look more like a bubbling green soup than a bunch of trees.

There are lots of reasons why DX12 would be a bad idea right now. Chief among them... not everyone has Windows 10.

You will note I said for release of Battle of Midway

Win 7 will be very out of date by then...and DX12 more mainstream, benefits of DX12 will be very useful for Ship Flak and other new "Pacific" features

I guess that should we see Dx12 it will be in the iteration after Midway maybe (hope that works out well!). The decision to make it Windows 10 only is really putting a problem up there. I don't know if it would by then be possible to keep the Dx11 renderer (while not developing it further) and add the Dx12 renderer. Of course this would give an advantage to dx12 users but I can't see bad feelings of customers as you have the choice.

But that is far away. Lets enjoy what we got now.

super fast and smooth here with no issues.  The micro stutters are gone, game looks fantastic, looking around in the cockpit always made the window frame go raggedy but no more.  Amazing job improving this sim.

From me too, very happy with the Dx11 upgrade.

Although I never really understood what DirectX actually is.

Fair enough :D

Jason did say that the transition from 9 to 11 was likely easier than 11 to 12 but that it wasn't off the table either.

I thought it was the other way around

I thought so too and then in the last Q&A it was basically said that a lot more work would need to be done to make DX11 stuff work with DX12 shaders. I can't pretend to know what's going on beyond the rudimentary pieces here unfortunately.

I hear DX12 is really cool and the performance benefits are potentially huge. But I'd rather not people feel left out in the dark either and it sounds like the team is taking that track too. I jumped on Windows 10 early because I'm typically close to being an early adopter. I quite like it but you'll find some Windows 7 die hards as we had WinXP die hards in the past.

The more I play, the more I feel like this is the most game-changing update in the history of this sim. It managed so much that has been a bother for years including fixing the issue with artifacts around the edges of objects in fromt of clouds which seemed impossible to solve.

I really like the change, is there more room for improvement? Absolutely, but it's a big and nice step forward.

In single player I'm glorious at 70 to 80fps, but in multiplayer I still only go 30/40 fps, which I find disappointing  :(

@people complaining about the ground LOD.

They said it will be more graphical fidelity improvements in the future with DX11 out of the door. (more performance with more details)

The game is now much better for me.  I used to get an unstable 20-30 fps looking straight up into the sky while flying, now i get a steady 40-45 range even while ground pounding or pursuing an enemy over dense areas.

Finally feel like I'm flying again!

Thanks devs.

I just wanted to chime in and say thank you very much for the DX11 update!  :)

Absolutely love what you did here!

I doubt it. They already said it would alienate all those who don't have Windows 10.

And frankly, all the games out there with DX12 have the same or worse performance than DX11. It's really pathetic after all the hype.

Posted

Yep - best to not be bleeding edge here.

Posted

I don't think DX12 will really be bleeding edge in two years...

mainstream support ended for win 7 on Jan 13 2015 and end of all support including security updates will be on the horizon when BoMidway is out

Things are changing quicker these days, than when win XP was around  :) for better or worse

I am so glad that people are happy about this sim,

I am really in love with this sim and I think it deserves more and more people using it.

I think the DX11 update will bring a lot of players back. I know a lot of my friends are giving it another try.

The biggest blockers for me and friends getting into it have been the 'rubber band-y' FM and the poor frame rate, both of which have been largely solved.

Also setting Distant Terrain to x4 seemed to solve a lot of the 'circle of LOD' for me.

AlI hope for now is an updated 190 and I'll be very happy.

Yup, credit where credit is due, the transition to DX11 (which has been going much more smooth than I would have expected) solved all my performance issues with the game. This update has been the biggest step forward for the sim, yet, I am sure. The last "big one" in the graphics/performance department would be the render range for me, everything else are minor peeves.

I am looking forward to what the new year will bring.

Since experiencing a FPS increase with DX11 update I had a bit of overhead for GRX options, I tried out in Nvidia settings

Texture filtering - quality

Changing from default 'Quality' to 'High quality'

previously this had a little too much impact on FPS to be worth it, but now Image quality does 'seem' better, with all the texture filtering optimisations turned off, with this setting

Worth a try if you have the spare performance overhead

I'm still trying to work out how much overhead I have. I'm playing 8080x1440 @ 60 and the only occasional slowdown I ever get I feel is CPU based multiplayer stuff. Loads of near by players taxiing etc. Never graphical slowdown.

Be interesting to see how far to push it.

LOL..

Dont worry about DX12
Its a gimmick just like DX10 and windows 8 were..

I mean really DX11 came out on the GTX680 (properly) in 2012
and still to this day many game use DX9 and last 12 months dx11 has become the big thing.

Maybe 2017 late i see some more dx12 stuff before microsoft drops it and normal dx13 and dx13 cards come out.
Just like DX10 in 2008

If you are getting stuttering try turning the frame limiter off and make sure you aren't running full screen.

Not sure why but it didn't seem to work very well with Vsync.

=TBAS=Sshadow14

DO NOT TURN ON INGAME VSYNC

It is of the adaptive type if your frames over 60 fine it will lock them to 60.
if they fall under 45fps it WILL lock them to 30 fps (aka Adaptive Vsync)

Disable ingame Vsync
Enable External Vsync (either nvidia or Ati control panels)

I do not know if the ingame vsync is of the adaptive type or not.

But adaptive vsync is exactly the opposite that you explained, and it was developed to avoid the problem of locking the fps to 30 when we could get for example 40.

Adaptive Vsync in a simplified expansion, a vertical sync that turns itself off below 60fps.(or whatever the monitor refresh rate)

I would try the ingame vsync and also to force it via GPU control panel.
