6./ZG26_Custard Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 I wonder if we are going to be lucky enough to have a section for 4K templates for all the aircraft? I do enjoy skinning but my puny skills are stretched to the max, not just with creating skins but when having to create templates from scratch. It appears rather daunting.
Yakdriver Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 i did a 1k to 2k conversion of a template once... not difficult except to line things up between Model Parts.Just time consuming. Some good music, popcorn and a night to chill... here we go.different section... dunno.
BlackHellHound1 Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 I have remade skin templates to 4K for WT. The majority of it is not difficult but some elements can make your life very difficult. However, remaking most elements from scratch will make the 4K template a lot better. And if you are wondering: It takes a long time to do! Especially remaking the Alpha layer takes a lot of time. (this is a must if you want a good looking plane!) Remaking the skins themselves is going to be even more challenging. Lots of logo's, emblems and stencils have to be completely remade from scratch or painstakingly re-detailed since the detail is a lot higher. It took me a month to remake a P-51D template to 4K. I expect it will take much longer to remake the BoS and BoM templates... Let alone the skins Highly detailed skins... BlackHellHound1 1
Yakdriver Posted December 10, 2016 Posted December 10, 2016 Yea, for Western Planes we can cheat though that typhoon took a couple of weeks to make - and i look forward to pick one aircraft and repeat the exercise :-)(bear in mind the lowpoly nature of the beast...) 1

Let alone the skins Highly detailed skins... I suspected as much, I took an initial look and thought.... Hopefully some kind folks in the community will eventually release some base templates. I also hope that after Kuban and moving into the Pacific the Devs will model 4K skins from then on. One can dream
BOO Posted December 11, 2016 Posted December 11, 2016 Hi, Im just coming to the end of a long process of producing skins for my Squad. (6 aircraft types, 25 numbers 10-15 camo variations for each model, winter and summer skins, with and without swastika - thats a lot of clipping to the base layer! :-)). The thought of redoing them in 4K is not something im relishing! I am a little confused about how and when 4K skins will or can be used in BOS. Will it happen with the advent of DX11? Does it take the devs to tell the 3D model to work with bigger skins or does it recognize them already? In short - is it something i need to think about in the next 6 months? Regards BOO

Regards BOO The next update, incorporating DX11 will enable 4K textures to be untilsed but with the workload that the Devs currently have it will have to be up to the commuity to create 4K skins. Hopefully we will get the update (and DX11) prior to Christmas.
=WH=PangolinWranglin Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 Dx11 is now upon us and I was wondering, when this wonderful community makes the yak 1b skin 4k, can CS2 Photoshop handle that?
6./ZG26_5tuka Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 Little headsups, 4k skins work wonderfully ingame (tested it with my wip Stuka template) but not in skin viewer. If you are working on a 4k skin you must ceck it out ingame. 2
BOO Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 Hey 5Tuka - are you saying it doesnt work because it doesnt appear correctly or because you get the error message about the file being too large when you try to load it? Thanks BOO
Picchio Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 I don't believe the devs used 2048x2048 textures as their working format, it doesn't make much sense... has anybody asked? I don't really know the details of how it's done in this case, but I guess we'd need them to UV unwrap all (well not all, but most of them at least) the aircraft models in order to have something decent to work with...

Thanks BOO Yes. Also when loading it anyway the skin will appear more blurry/fuzzy than it should be (probably because the skin viewer is trying to downscale it to native 2k resolution). Until the viewer gets an update it can't be used for 4k skinning properly.

VBF-12_Stick-95 Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 Jason, I hope we can have one pinned thread for the 4k templates like the 2k. It's going to get confusing otherwise. It would probably have to be maintained by an admin so the links are in the first post and can by edited for additions/changes as needed. I assume comments about 4k skins can still go to the existing pinned threads by aircraft.
