In the case of the La-5, you are entirely ignoring the fact they were at Stalingrad in late August 1942. Heck, I even included that fact in the manual and countered you on this before, but you didn't bother to reply. ;) Not to mention, Brano showed you were wrong about the Yak-1 right after my post.

Source for the La5?

Production start is something completely different then introduction to front line duty. Production start of Me262 was in 1943.

Start of serial production for La-5 with M-82 engine

June 1942 - Zavod nr.21 in Gorky.

The first unit to train on new machines was 49.KIAP (Red Banner Order Figter Regiment) which was relocated to the premises of Gorky plant to learn about new machines by order from 7.6.1942. They started to fly factory fresh machines 15.7.1942.

Allready 11.8.1942 they were sent to Western front, taking part in Rzhev "Meatgrinder" as part of 234.IAD

August 1942 - Zavod nr.99 in Ulan-Ude (near Baykal Lake)

October 1942 - Zavod  nr.381 in Nizhnyi Tagil (in 1943 relocated to Moscow)

There are multiple references around of La-5 arriving at Stalingrad in Aug 42

The new La-5 was sent to Stalingrad and the 287 IAD with 27 IAP, 240 IAP, 247 IAP and 437 IAP at Verkhnyaya airport. Graf shot down his first two La-5 on 8 September followed by two more on 9 September. On 10 September two more fell to his guns over Stalingrad.

I also read that there were 22 La-5 produced with FN engine during 42, not used in combat mind, but this would lead to thoughts that there were less than 30 La-5FN at Kursk in July 43 as being unlikely?

your source manu*?

Fixed slats? Whats that? You probably mean fixed leading edge slats? Like on the Fi-156 Storch? Hardly ever on La-5  :)

Where it says Dec. 16 on the calendar, is that December 16th or December 2016?

@ Manu

Black Cross - Red Star Volume 3 - page 246 (OOB of VVS 8th Air Army and 102 IAD/PVO on Sept 1 1942):

287 IAD (HQ at Verkhnyaya Akhtuba)

  • 27 IAP - La-5
  • 240 IAP - La-5
  • 297 IAP - La-5
  • 437 IAP - La-5

Combat debut of 287 IAD according to the same book was August 20 1942 (page 137/138). There was also at least one Regiment in the combat zone near Rzhev, but I haven't found the page in that quick look through the book.

An interesting note on La-5 development, is that although La-5F was used in combat first, both La-5F improvements and La-5FN were two parallel projects run at the same time by 2 different teams

logical thought would assume one followed the other (which is partly true anyway  :) )

La-5FN production was limited by availability of NB-3U fuel pumps from Zavod nr.296. Serial production was just starting and they didn't have capacity to cover all needs of Zavod nr.19 - manufacturer of engines. Gorky factory produced F and FN versions in parallel. Improvements introduced and tested on La-5 called "Dubler" (jan-april 43) were implemented only for La-5FN not to complicate F version production together with its exploitation by ground crews and pilots. As fuel pumps production increased, number of carburetor M-82F engines decreased. Standard running change in any mass production.
