If that was a gun he could blow him up :P

I don't believe this guy's story. In fact, his story contradicts wartime records. First of all there were no Zero's involved in that encounter. Second, no Japanese pilots were killed.

"This account is not consistent with Japanese wartime records - discussed in the book "B-24 Liberators vs Ki-43 Oscars" by Edward M Young on page 57. This dogfight was between 13 Ki-43s of the JAAF 64th Sentai and around 12 B-24s of the 7th BG. There were no Japanese pilot losses."

No, but proving wrong that some records are not true is usually much harder, on the other hand witness stories are much easier to bust.

The probability that Japanese Army Sento Shoho is incorrect is drastically lower than that of a pilot or crew member claiming something. Sento Shoho are official post combat reports, this documents are held at the Tokyo NIDS and are best source at indicating actual combat losses. They are of general form but provide details of each pilot and his fate (as well as his aircraft), they clearly quote the detail of losses and claims. As a matter of fact in many instances they are more precise than a lot of allied unit's war diaries/reports.

Actually flares in game do a lot of damages to aircrafts and pilots

Tried it with a friend, we fired flares at each other after spawning on an airfield on our squadron training server, one well placed flare is enough to destroy an engine or headshot the pilot (instantly killed my friend :'D)

Never underestimate the power of flares :'D

YOu want pistols? Download Rise of Flight! They modeled several different types of pistols.

Reminds me of those crazy videos, when a guy killed a Two-Seater with his pistol in Rise of Flight. Never managed to reproduce that though. :)

It's very much reproducable :).

Much more trustworthy than individual pilots memories, and less likely to exaggerate...

I know these vets are old guys now and people wouldn't suspect them of lying but, they were quite young when the war was going on.

I've spent three years in Iraq during the recent war. There were several people in my platoon that we caught writing BS stories back home to their families trying to make themselves out to be some kind of hero badass.

Even if we rule out outright lying (usually a fair thing to do) it is just a fact that claims and awarded victories exceeded actual losses by huge amounts.  This was true in WWI at 120 MPH and even more so in WWII with bigger battles at 400 MPH.  Too fast, too confusing, too much adrenaline.  I can completely respect the danger that these men put themselves in and still admit that the stories are not to be taken as Truth with a capital "T".
