Rolling_Thunder Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 I did some testing and on a 4k monitor the resolution of the vive looks similar to somewhere between 800x600 and 1024x768 without jaggies. BoS looks stunning in 4k that's for sure but even with the lower resolution of VR I still cant go back to a 4k monitor. I hope that gives folk an understanding of the resolution of VR. It's really not a problem considering the immersion one gets. 4
MadisonV44 Posted December 18, 2016 Posted December 18, 2016 Built-in, either button on a controller, or a button on the headset. Usually the camera image is attached to one of your controllers. There is also the wireframe camera view, but that probably only good for finding your beer or keyboard, not reading keys. Example of this mode is below. Many thanks for the info !
saunder Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 I think there are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to VR. I dont have a top end machine i7 4790 and a GTX 980 it runs DCS with no real problems and I have had some brilliant WW2 dog fights on there. I use the CV 1 I have tried both the CV1 and the Vive and I found that the CV1 had slightly clearer image than the Vive. I rarely need to remove my headset to look for anything you soon get to know where they are and when it comes to general commands like views or communications you can use voice attack which adds even more realism. I am getting a very sharp image when flying DCS and the immersion more than makes up for the down grade in graphics. The CV1 costs little more than a 3 monitor setup and it would have to be a low end set up at that. I tried going back to Trackir I swapped my headset for a friends trackir for a week I gave it him back after 3 days and he ordered a CV1 and we are both very much into the graphics when it comes to flightsim. It does not suit every one if you get motion sickness with it then its probably not for you. When I first started if I rolled the aircraft my stomach would roll with it but same as any real pilot you get used to it and it goes away after a short period of time. I will not spend a penny on a game unless it as VR support and I have spent about $500\600 on DCS over the last 2 years. 1
JG4_Sputnik Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 Its funny how motion sickness was a big thing for me, since I can't even sit in a car and read without getting motion sick. However I made the bold move and ordered the rift anyway, but I was so afraid that motion sickness would ruin this hardware for me. And I waited for it so long for it to being released that I was willing to take the risk. Now I can even dogfight without getting motion sick unless I goes on forever and a lot of unrealistic high G moves are involved. In cars however it's a different story because the constant breaking/accelerating/bumping into others makes it a whole lot more difficult than a ride in a plane where breaking/accelerating is way more gentle. The funny thing is that in combat flightsims you begin to even think differently before you go into a fight - I think you will get a similar mindset as real fighter pilot does. Is it really smart to go into a fight and hope you can do so many crazy moves whilst looking 180 degrees back and counter every movement your opponent does, that in the end, you might win just because of flying on the limit the whole time. Shooting at high G whilst making a barrel rolls and stalling a bit and then recover 1m from the ground... Now in VR, you go in, fight for a minute or two, and if you don't get the edge you break and try to outrun/outclimb for better position or leaving the area. You have a lot more respect of the act of fighting itself, be it because of nausae, be it because you really have the feeling of sitting in a expensive plane that really could crash. It ads so much more realism to the genre on so many levels. I would say it is the biggest improvement in the flight sim genre since 3D graphics I hope there will be VR servers online eventually so you don't have to deal with those "monitor arcade noobs" anyomore ;-) It sounds cocky, but once you've tried it it really feels like you've played on a gameboy screen before and now hang with the real fighter pilots I just wanted everybody could try it. And thought that BoS will support it soon is so appealing! 5

II./JG77_Manu* Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 (edited) I would say it is the biggest improvement in the flight sim genre since 3D graphics I hope there will be VR servers online eventually so you don't have to deal with those "monitor arcade noobs" anyomore ;-) They will come i am pretty sure..there are programs that can detect what devices you are using. In racing Sims - to be more specific Assetto Corsa - there are leagues where it's mandatory to use clutch pedal and H-pattern shift for manual cars, when you want to attend the races. There are plugins that can detect every device that's being used while racing. Something similar will come for VR and flight sim, i am pretty sure of it. Especially for tournaments/COOP campaigns that try to recreate most realism. I don't have a VR device yet, not for a while, but i hope those servers will be up once i got one. Alongside other VR optimizations like smart scaling etc Edited December 19, 2016 by II./JG77_Manu*
III./JG54_Kurt_Wallner Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 Hello folks!! I tested the HTV Vive non direct mode a while ago and it worked! Now with the latest patch I get a crash each time at launch. d3d_error Fullscreen mode is not avallable dxgi_status_occluded Anyone successfully using IL2 in VR since latest patch please ? Not sure if I do anything wrong or if VR is currently broken
ZnarF Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 Unfortunately no, no VR for the moment... As the hardest step, Dx11, has just been made -and with success- we can only cross our fingers that now, VR implementation is not forgotten!
Piekarz Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 (edited) We have DX11 now...does anybody manage to launch IL2BOS in Oculus CV1?Walkarounds, vorpX? Edited December 20, 2016 by Piekarz_wa
ZnarF Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 (edited) VorpX? Mmmh.....nice idea, now that BoX is Dx11.... but could we emulate the head-tracking? Edited December 20, 2016 by ZnarF
=ARTOA=Rauchenderkolben Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 nooo... doesn't work for me either. great now I cant play this game at all... ( no I'm not going to play with a monitor again, it sucks hard ) 1

Not sure if I do anything wrong or if VR is currently broken I get the same message unless I have the "make compositor fullscreen" message. In the past BoS used to run in VR when compositor wasn't full screen. Now it runs but not on the headset, I get the split screen image on my monitor but no UI
ducs Posted December 21, 2016 Posted December 21, 2016 (edited) I'm able to launch IL2 in split screen and it auto-starts vrserver.exe from steamvr AND the game follows my Rifts head tracking, but I can't get the image in my headset. Hmmm, anyone have any ideas? Edited December 21, 2016 by [TWB]ducs
ZnarF Posted December 21, 2016 Posted December 21, 2016 The Bigscreen app (free on Oculus Home) has an option for taking side-by-side stereo image from the monitor and shaping/sending that to the Rift -> maybe that could work?

I have been running it through virtual desktop with Opentrack(rift sdk) for tracking. but never knew there was an oculus app that could do the sbs. Did anyone try?
Urra Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 (edited) The app is free but seems to want a lot of permissions to read your contacts and what websites are visited etc. Edited December 22, 2016 by Smok
kissklas Posted December 22, 2016 Posted December 22, 2016 The app is free but seems to want a lot of permissions to read your contacts and what websites are visited etc. Well it's most likely connected with Facebook so that is to expect. Data gathering and so on... Will try it when I get back from vacation in January. If anyone tries it before that, I would love to hear if it's any good.
ZnarF Posted December 23, 2016 Posted December 23, 2016 No real results here, only S-b-S on the monitor, but nothing in the headset... did anyone got more success?
