TXTwilight Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 Since the search didn´t brought a specific thread about AA Fire up, I hope it is OK to open a new topic about it. Most RoF veterans know, that in the vanilla game AA guns aren´t more then an ambient effect. Sometimes it shakes your plane a little, but you really have to fly at low altitude and with low speed to get hit by it. Of course there are servers like the Syndicate one, which increased it´s effectiveness quite a lot almost to the point, where it is frutrating. Getting hit at 2km´s altitude and max speed can be really annoying. Currently I fly the old IL-2 with the Dark Blue Worlds Mod to get a better feeling for the planes and the timeframe of BoS and had two low altitude missions. Even at full speed it is almost guaranteed you get hit after a couple of minutes if you fly over AA emplacements. On the first one I got hole in my right wing and was forced to return to my homebase. On the second mission a single Flak grenade punched holes in both wings and damaged my engine and I barely reached freindly territory to perform a crash landing. What my point is, as soon as you fly over enemy territory in BoS there should be a constant fear to get hit by random AA fire, without beeing too much frustrating. So, what do you expect from BoS in regards of AA guns? How is the historical documentation about this topic in regards of the AA effectiveness against certain type of planes, altitude and speed?
=RvE=Windmills Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 Accuracy is determined by the skill the gunners are given by the mission designer right? So it really depends what the designer is going for imo. For MP use you'd want crack gunners protecting spawnbases deterring people from even going near there, while frontline bases and targets would have slightly more relaxed AA protection. For the average situation though, it'd be nice if AA would gradually zero in their sights on you. ie first shots have a low chance of hitting, but if you keep hanging out there the gunnners will start to improve their firing solution. Would be neat if that was affected by evasive action as well.
=38=Tatarenko Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 Historically once Stalingrad has been surrounded there should be a lot of blockade AA along the resupply routes. I hope the history of the battle is well modelled.
JtD Posted November 29, 2013 Posted November 29, 2013 I have grown to dislike AAA, unless in scenarios where it is part of the scenario. I've been online, dogfighting with folks at 6000m when suddenly my aircraft lost a wing - hit by AAA. In a midst of a dogfight, somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Sure. Very frustrating. On the other hand, going in, low altitude, with an Il-2 loaded with hurt, press it home, blow up the target, return to base with a plane that's mostly made of holes, is pretty cool. I'd accept AAA opposing me if I get points for AAA that expended its ammo, but having AI dudes with nothing to lose sit on the ground and taking cheap shots at my aircraft forever just plain sucks.

So if you want accurate guns for the spawns, the frontline AA will also be pretty effective. A more increased hit chance over time would be really nice. Yeah, it allways bothered me in Clod that there was almost no AA around. I think I can count on one hand how often I was damaged by AA fire and that was while flying low altitude missions with the BF-110. I guess no one wants that. It´s not only frustrating, but hitting a fighter plane in the middle of a dogfight at high altitude is almost impossible. Straight flying bomber formations are another story.
