Tipskin Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 Hi all, I find it very difficult to identify to which side the smaller fighter planes belong to.Unfortunately for my team I often hit friendly and I can imagine how frustrating it is to other players. Taxi, fly to the area, have a good fight and then to get shot down by a teammate Honestly, from certain angles they all look the same to me Please, if you have a tip or a certain plane feature you are looking at in order to identify it would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Haza Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 Tipskin, To be honest you are not the only one and I'm sure that there are some very experienced guys out there who still get it wrong. I have been playing for nearly a year and I still get confused. However, I have sent you a youtube link to the Air combat guys, that might help to just look at the planes and the shapes etc. Even Gunther Rall was shot down by an I-16 that he thought was a FW190 because of the size of the engine!! Anyway, stick with it as it will come with experience. If you see either myself or B0SS in game we will be happy to join up with you as it is always better to fly in a minimum of 2. regards Haza https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwV5RLX7mkaDy5gTIiuwGmg
=EXPEND=Tripwire Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 See Finkerens Easy ID guide as a starting point. Some fantastic work. http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/20968-wip-finkerens-easy-id-guide/
IRRE_Centx Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 (edited) The best advice is: You are not sure about the target? Don't open fire and get closer. 95% of player will not see you coming anyway, so you can take time to get closer and be sure of your identification. And as Haza said, it's always easier to identify planes when you fly with a wingman. One player can be wrong, with two players the probability of being wrong is lower! Missidentification can happen even to the most experienced players, don't worry! Edited November 28, 2016 by -IRRE-Centx
=EXPEND=Tripwire Posted November 28, 2016 Posted November 28, 2016 The main feature I use is the wing shape. Thin wings are typically German. Wider wings Russian. Thin tail fuselage section from a side perspective = German. Thicker tail = Russian. Lastly for the bounce, radiator position is really the defining ID point. Radiators in the wings = 109. Radiator under the center line = most likely Russian. 1
