707shap_Srbin Posted November 26, 2016 Posted November 26, 2016 (edited) Hallo gentlemen. I am trying to determine photo reference for Schnaufer's Bf110G-4's. I need especially overall photoes, wich shows camouflage of whole aircraft(s). Still have a question: G9+EF - what was a background of emblem - RLM76 or black? What was uppersurface color - solid RLM75 or overall RLM76 with sparks of RLM75? Here what I have found. Schnaufer's appointments on duries: 01.08.42 Lt., Gruppen T.O in Stab II./NJG 1. 13.08.43 Oblt., appt Staka 12./NJG 1 (to 01.03.44). 01.03.44 Oblt., appt Kdr. IV./NJG 1 (to 04.11.44). 04.11.44 Hptm., appt Kommodore NJG 4 (to 08.05.45). 21.11.44 Hptm., Stab/NJG 4. 09.04.45 flew his last mission. Known aircrafts: Stab II./NJG 1 ??? - 13.08.43) Bf110G-4 W.Nr.????? G9+EC. FuG202. Schnaufer flew it during april-may 1943. 12./NJG 1 (13.08.43 - 01.03.44) Bf110G-4 W.Nr. 720260 G9+EZ. FuG220. Schnaufer flew it from late summer '43 to march 1943, then took it with him to Stab IV./NJG 1, where it got new code. Bf110G-4 W.Nr.?????? G9+DZ. FuG???. Flew it during december 1943. Spare aircraft? Stab IV./NJG 1 (01.03.44 - 04.11.44) Bf110G-4 W.Nr. 720260 G9+EF. FuG220. Schnaufer continued to use this aircraft from april '44 to june '44. Schnaufer made his last 3 victories with G9+EF on 7.3.45 making his total of 121 kills. On 29/30 March 1945 his unit was transferred to Wunstorf for evacuation….. and G9+EF was left behind at Gütersloh. Schnaufer thought that it was only a temporarily transfer, but it wasn’t, so he wanted to have his own plane back and so another crew was ordered to pick it up for him.On 30 March 1945 this aircraft and a number of Fw 190s were being flown to safety from the advancing enemy troops. It was en route from Gutersloh to Wunstorf when it was shot down, probably by a chasing Mosquito, crashing in the hills of Westphalia. The pilot that day, (not Schnaufer), and one crew member was killed and a third badly injured. Both G9+EF and 3C+BA were marked up with 121 kills. It was discovered by a military-air historian in the 1960s, who spotted the unique artifact being used to patch up a roof in the village of Hillegossen, Germany, and was sold for £107,550. Stab./NJG 4. Bf110G-4 W.Nr.180560 3C+BA. FuG218. Schnaufer flew it during spring 1945. Later, this aircraft was transferred to England, and now both Tailfins are exibited in museums. Left fin: Imperial War Museum, UK. Right fin: Australian war Memorial, Canberra, Australia. Edited November 26, 2016 by I./ZG1_Panzerbar
Pierre64 Posted November 26, 2016 Posted November 26, 2016 Hi, the contemporary color photographs of both fins you posted above have all a similar yellowish cast. Is it an effect of ageing and/or weathering of the original RLM 76 lichtblau paint ? Or an overspray of RLM 02?
707shap_Srbin Posted November 26, 2016 Author Posted November 26, 2016 It is an effect of both agening (laquer becomes yellowish with ages) - mainly, and possibly a misproportion of ingredients/producion fault of color producer, wich was evident in the latter stages of war.
A-E-Hartmann Posted April 6, 2017 Posted April 6, 2017 Hi , Apparently do the badge would be transparent. On the photograph we see the camouflage through the insignia.
