Haza Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 (edited) Gents, I've just been watching the History Channel regarding Operation Mars and it mentioned the effectiveness of the Tu-2. Therefore, can anybody provide me with any more information (In English please) about the TU-2, other than Wikipedia, as I would be interested to know more about this aircraft I initially thought the TU2 was a Pe2 as it looked the same in the black and white film shown during the program. In addition, does anybody know if the TU-2 was ever considered for this sim? Anyway cheers for any info Regards Haza Edited November 22, 2016 by Haza
216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Despite getting an early run out in 1942, the Tu-2 is really a 1944 aircraft. The early production series was relatively small, and its combat testing gave Tupolev the direction in which to improve the aircraft. I met a pilot who flew the Tu-2 as well as the Pe-2, and he spoke very fondly of it. According to him the aircraft just flew itself, even on landing and take-off. Until its widespread introduction however, the Pe-2 and A-20 are the right medium bombers for the job in this sim since they were the main workhorses, together with the DB-3.
Cybermat47 Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Well, here's a Tu-2 weapon mod I'd like to see. I met a pilot who flew the Tu-2 as well as the Pe-2, and he spoke very fondly of it. According to him the aircraft just flew itself, even on landing and take-off. Must've been amazing to meet him! 1
Finkeren Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 I so hope we'll see a "Bagration" installment of this sim once they're done fooling around the Pacific. Tu-2S, La-5FN, Yak-3, Arrow-wing IL-2M, Bf109G14, Fw 190A8, Ju 188... there are so many really iconic aircraft to model. 5

The very fact that the Chinese Air Force operated their Tu-2's right up into the late 1970s is an indication, that it was a great aircraft. IIRC it also had one of the lowest loss rates of any of the VVS aircraft that saw significant action, which is why despite its modest production numbers, it was actually a fairly common aircraft late in the war.
ShamrockOneFive Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 I'd love to see the Tu2 sometime. As others have said... its a late war bomber and it would fit in with the later campaigns. I hope we do see it sometime where appropriate!
AndyJWest Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 Soviet training video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWWfam0tw_Y In Russian, but doesn't really need translation - a good look around, with the usual preflight 'wiggle anything that moves, and if it doesn't come off in your hand it's good to go' routine. Not as good looking as the Pe-2 in my opinion, but a clean functional design nevertheless. Would certainly be nice to see it in a Bagration campaign or something of the sort. 1
ShamrockOneFive Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 How about the Pe-8 instead? The Pe-8 is a really interesting bomber from a number of standpoints but I'm not sure if I'd love for the team to focus on such a project. As much as I love having it a flyable in IL-2 1946 I also think that its a huge amount of work for an aircraft that is impressive but not something regularly used or seen. Aside from a handful of nighttime bombing operations surrounding some major offensives, a few attacks against Germany directly, and some long range attacks to other cities, the Pe-8 was not well used. Not in comparison to a workhorse like the Pe-2 or the Tu-2 which despite its small numbers was highly active. If they go for a big heavy bomber (probably a separate collector plane with a higher price) I'd like for it to be the B-24 or the B-17. Heavily used in three theaters and immediately iconic.
Finkeren Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 Shamrock said it. Generally speaking, there is no need to model any plane with production numbers of less than 100 in a WW2 sim.
