Yearning for a Yak-3

Recommended Posts

After fiddling around in the Yak-1b for the last couple nights, I really hope we can get the Yak-3 modeled. She would be the first plane I really "mastered" in 1946. Light, responsive, and very forgiving, it was the perfect plane for the hamfisted beginner pilot. The Yak-1b already gives much of the same feeling, and I'd love to one day fly the late-war Soviet planes in a modern sim.

Anyone remember which Yak in the old sim was the total UFO? Was it the 3?

One of them I'd see it 1000 meters below me and figure I was safe and before I knew it he'd point his nose at me and be on my 6 - total dweeb plane.

Can't remember which one it was now.

It was either the 3 or the 9. Possibly the 3 with the VK-107 engine, that thing was stupid amazing. I never played online so playing Berlin 45 in the 3p was incredible.

The La-5FN in '46 was a total noob clown car. I flew it once and had six low level kills in about four minutes. Climbed like a scalded dog and turned like an F1 car.

I hope to see the Yak-3 and the -5FN in a late war scenario with 190D-9's and 109K-4's as well. But all in good time. I'm eager to be on the 'crap' side in the Pacific with my lovely F4F-3 first.

As much as I love the Zeke, I enjoy that side of it just as much.

It makes for a rewarding mission to dive through a formation of Zekes, maybe get a kill, maybe not...then land safely back on the carrier...or

sometimes Henderson if things progress as they should. I'm going to throw that in there every chance I get dammit.

There was a Yak-3 with the VK-107 and without, and then there was also the Yak-9U which also carries the VK-107.  I think there was a Yak-9UT which had the big beastly gun but wasn't quite as fast.

The -9U could tangle with Doras up at 6500m on pretty much even terms.

The real UFO was the La-7 as I recall, though.

I probably missed out a bit not flying the Russian planes at all in the old sim with the exception of the I16 that I didn't discover until shortly after the final "46" version.

Where the Eastern Front was concerned I was a bit "Murfy" and only few German for the longest time. (no offense to Murf)

I didn't fly any of the Russian A/C but that one bomber that looked like a metal shed with wings. So I missed out as well I guess.

I had fun shooting Beowulf down with the I16 though - ol grumpy.

The best last scenario i think must be Berlin, there were best of USA, nest of LW and of course best of VVS.

Or can be also those planes at the end have it all at least like collector planes, the best of each sides, uf, all gonna buy those.

Good old TB-3. What a piece of trash, yet so romantic to fly in.

I flew Soviet a lot of the time, mainly because I started with the original Il-2 which only had Soviet and German campaigns. Mostly I flew the P-39 and MiG-3 on crazy quick missions I'd come up with. After 1946 came, for a year or two I had my Luftwaffle phase and even joined a mostly-blue squad (I think it was called [KO]; the CO was definitely a dude called Matrix, but I can't remember the rest now). I drifted out of the Luftwaffe on SP because I hated the Bf-109G-6 so much I couldn't stand flying it for more than three missions after the breeze that was the G-2, and online I didn't like the Fw-190 too much either. At around that time I was falling in love with the Spitfire, and despite being abysmal at flying it I kept trying until I got the knack of it. I was still abysmal at air-to-air combat, but I felt happy.

A Lock On and DCS phase settled in for a while, and when I finally came out of the freezer all I wanted was to fly the Il-2. My dogfighting skills were still poor but this time around I didn't want to settle for them so instead I played on my strengths from DCS: ground attack in the Su-25. The Shturmovik was a natural step, and reliving history through it was exciting. Nothing will ever be as scary in a simulator as watching those late-mark 109s and 190s swarming around with their 30mm guns while the escort evaporates.

Oops, forgot about the Mig3 - I flew that one a ton.

Not only the Yak-3!

Compared to 46, IMHO, we have come a long way.

I sit here and imagine

Mitchells with and without guns in the nose, B and D stangs, a Yak9T, Thunder and Lightning... done to the same level of accuracy and detail, technically and graphically.
Zeroes, Raidens, Cobras and Corsairs, Vals, Essexes, USS Atlanta and the Hawaiian Islands.
Malta Italy, the Alps, Doras Schwalbe, MC205 and Re.2005
Hawk75, D.520, Wirbelwind and the Japanese Kagero, Horse drawn Artillery and an M16 AAA truck.

Just anything in WWII really.

I see such things before my inner eye and am happy we are not there yet...
I could not deal with it, i would go nuts.

But i would put down money for a Yak-3 just like i pay for my playboy subscription.

Yak-3 is Porn in its finest form.

I do remember that the old il2 got ruined after v4.06m. Lots flyers vanished after this version came out. not trying to say that it's perfect before that version, but things swing too much after that.

From what I remember, the i185 was a step higher in UFOness than the lavotchkins.

I was just about to bring up the I-185. Never hit production, crazy performance in the old 1946
