I don't know for you, but for me the main argument is the download speed of updates.

I have a crap internet connection, I download updates at 40-50kb/s from IL-2 launcher, 500 kb/s from Steam...

Except this, I have no idea if there are other benefits

Pretty much none, especially if you already transferred BOS. From that key, you get all the updates for BOM and BOK because it's linked to your IL2 account that you log into when starting the game.

Self-updating, social networking, content management, etc. There are many tangible benefits to Steam's platform on a whole.

"Pretty much none" statements always cause me to infer that somebody has a chip on their shoulder regarding Valve/Steam and they choose to ignore what Steam as a platform offers.

Much faster download speeds indeed, and all social networking features it has as Space Ghost said. With all the gears and springs working, Steam is a much better choice.

It has only ONE con... You'll be dependent on two different servers in order to play. On standalone version you'll only be dependent on the game server itself to launch, and even if it's down, you'll be able to launch in offline mode having access to quick mission and mission features at least.

This game doesn't like steam in offline mode as far as I remember. If anyone knows the contrary you can correct me.

Seconded.

I think you misunderstood, or didn't even read my comment. I said that since he already has BOS activated on Steam, activating BOM brings no advantages because you only need one key to get all your content through Steam.

I have no gripe with Steam, I buy all my games there and I currently have 173 games on Steam.

Their forums for BOS are not really that good, it's full of haters and trolls, oh wait...

An underlooked benefit.

Valve's servers are connected to some fat pipes, be sure.

Don'cha just love flightsim forums!

The only time I didn't like Steam was waiting two hours for Half-life 2 to update itself before launching for the first time, and back then I didn't understand what Steam (or downloading self-updating games) really was. Otherwise, I think it's pretty cool - no more need to worry about installation disks or even save-games in the event of your hard drive dying.

But the non-steam BoS offers most of those advantages anyway. So, as SG mentioned, with Steam you'll get notifications if "friends" are playing the game right now, etc, which was kind-of useful for CloD, but I don't miss it in BoS.)

ok thanks guys. I've already ported BOS, I might as well do the same for BOM and BOK when it comes out.

No! let me explain.

The whole point is that you only need to have one steam key to get access to all the modules you bought on IL2.com. What decides the modules you can play is not Steam but your IL2 profile. When you log into the game (after launch) that's where the game knows what products you bought.

Your current Steam installation has all the data for BOS and BOM (and in the future for BOK and collector planes) even if you only bought one product. Steam downloads the BOX platform (all of it) and then you can add modules by just buying on IL2.

If for example after that you buy BOM on IL2.com  and dont have a Steam key for it, you will still be able to play it through your BOS steam key.

What dictates the contents of the game is what keys you have registered on your IL2 profile, not on Steam.

The benefit of not getting more Steam keys and buying directly from the devs is that they get more money and you still get full access from Steam.  That's a win-win.

Jade is absolutely right. AFAIK, the only difference, when you get a Steam key for BOM is, that BOM will appear in your Steam library as DLC of BOS.

Some people like to have their games in a single library i e steam library.

All non steam dlcs bought on official il2 site will be available in steam library as soon as they are published there. And you can use the content immediately, even it is not yet in steam. What matters is IL2BOS site key activation.

Its similar to rise of flight, I had bought everything on their website, and later wanted to run it through steam.

So I downloaded the free demo of rise of flight on steam and logged in no problems.

Steam just downloads The game. Nothing more.
