I bought a Razer keypad, it works amazing for me in VR, sometimes you might still press the wrong button, but it is super easy to feel where your hand is, since you place it on the palm rest.

I have been using trackIR for years and love it and have been holding off on VR until units have higher resolutions and frame rates.  This next generation may be worth a try but for sure I will try the generation after.  One thing that always throws me however is using controls.  IL2 has a lot of controls and I have many mapped to my HOTAS and while a lot of them can be determined by feel alone not all can.  For example my Virpil throttle has 8 buttons on the base that are all identical and are mapped to oil/radiator/air cooling.  I also use a Stream Deck and again the buttons are all the same and would be very difficult to identify by feel alone.   So just wondering how you overcome this issue?

I started building some real time mixed reality software to solve this issue in VR but it never took off so I couldn't justify working on it anymore.

It needs someone big like valve to come up with a hardware/software solution. High speed low light stereo cameras built into the HMD and probably some AI to remove the background without a greenscreen.
