jaydee Posted November 9, 2016 Posted November 9, 2016 Hi lads. I chose the Topic title so it cant be debated. Just a word of caution for those thinkin of upgrading to win 10. (1) my internet is regularly at a snails pace because Win 10 has decided to Update itself. I cant turn off Automatic Updates. (2) Win 10 has removed a program I purchased (piriforms Ccleaner) twice. I have been using Ccleaner for ten years but apparently MS does not like it.(google it) ! (3) The PC that I built to Fly is now being treated like a Mobile Phone. I have " Lost Control " (excuse the pun) of what my OS is doing. I wish I could have Win 7 back. Think carefully before upgrading. ~S~
Bando Posted November 9, 2016 Posted November 9, 2016 I have Win 10 also installed and partially agree with you. Had troubles with the updates, but the worst was to increase a hidden partition for Win 10 couldn't do the big update a few months ago. I have CCleaner running no problems, but I have the free version. You may want to install yours again as admin. In general however I'm satisfied with the way it runs and I do not regret getting Win 7 upgraded to 10.
Dakpilot Posted November 9, 2016 Posted November 9, 2016 Updates are just a fact of life now.. Generally they improve more than they break overall I am very satisfied with Win 10 Cheers Dakpilot 3
Dutchvdm Posted November 9, 2016 Posted November 9, 2016 Updates are just a fact of life now.. ZachariasX Posted November 9, 2016 Posted November 9, 2016 If you have troubles with W10, think about W98 and the countless BSOD's You can think of Win7 and you have no more BSOD's as with Win 10. It was also the last iteration of Windows that gave you the impression that is was your computer and your software configuration, rather than the current remotely configured home shopping channel formerly known as "the desktop". But I can't deny that there is some charm in turning on a computer, never knowing what will appear on the screen. But is that something you want to work with? Some people are obviously happy being put on a leash. Here, find the satisfied Win10 user: 1
Dakpilot Posted November 9, 2016 Posted November 9, 2016 Unfortunately 99% of (modern) computer users do need to be led around like that the remaining 1% (quite a large number actually) are intelligent enough to avoid looking like that Cheers Dakpilot
ZachariasX Posted November 9, 2016 Posted November 9, 2016 the remaining 1% (quite a large number actually) are intelligent enough to avoid looking like that That would imply no more updates of any kind to your Win10. Trust me, you are led around like that on Win10. It is by no way an exclusive feature. Other vendors, most actually, follow or even lead that trend.
Matt Posted November 9, 2016 Posted November 9, 2016 (1) my internet is regularly at a snails pace because Win 10 has decided to Update itself. I cant turn off Automatic Updates. You can (but probably shouldn't). Windows 10 is definately much faster for me than Windows 7, but that's the only real advantage i see.
ZachariasX Posted November 9, 2016 Posted November 9, 2016 Windows 10 is definately much faster for me than Windows 7, but that's the only real advantage i see. The issues of Win10 are not so much of technological nature. After all those years, it would be darn sad if MS couldn't come up with an improved system. The problem with it is what it should be. It is no more an operating system that you can adjust to your needs, but with every update, it adjusts itself to Microsofts needs. Don't mistake them for yours. Xbox and Win10 are converging. What do you think will happen: you being able installing an adblocker to the Xbox web browser or you in the long run losing the ability to do so on Win10? As a gameloader it is certainly ok. But now the question arises whether you trust your data to the discretion of Win10?
Matt Posted November 9, 2016 Posted November 9, 2016 As a gameloader it is certainly ok. But now the question arises whether you trust your data to the discretion of Win10? Do you trust your data to the discretion of any company?
Jade_Monkey Posted November 9, 2016 Posted November 9, 2016 I have no issues with W10. CCleaner works fine and its not gone.
ZachariasX Posted November 9, 2016 Posted November 9, 2016 Do you trust your data to the discretion of any company? You have to give people the benefit of the doubt to some extent. Life gets very difficult if you can't do that at all. If someone makes your data a source of his revenues, then no, no trust is warranted at all. When evasdroping on you is corporate reason, then you can't trust them. And that is the problem of Win10. Just because you don't see a pricetag on what they are taking, you think there is none? Why would they go that great lenght to get all that data? Remember, there is no cloud, just the computer of someone else. I have no issues with W10. CCleaner works fine and its not gone. Works on mine as well. This is not about them being evil, but about us being stupid.
Danziger Posted November 9, 2016 Posted November 9, 2016 I regret buying a laptop with Windows 10 already installed. It's sole purpose now is sitting on the nightstand as a TV for my wife and I to watch Netflix before falling to sleep.
VBF-12_Stick-95 Posted November 9, 2016 Posted November 9, 2016 I have my Windows 10 with Services - Windows Update set to Manual. It gives me a warning that it may update in the near future when the system is not in use. It has never updated on me while I am in the middle of anything. When I'm done I usually just do a reboot to update.
VBF-12_Stick-95 Posted November 9, 2016 Posted November 9, 2016 (edited) Here is a great website with a list of all Win10 processes, what they do and which can be shut down, etc. and how to do it easily. http://www.blackviper.com/service-configurations/black-vipers-windows-10-service-configurations/ Edited November 9, 2016 by 12.OIAE_Stick-95
Warpig Posted November 9, 2016 Posted November 9, 2016 Might as well get used to Win10. I didn't want to upgrade either, but that's the way Microsoft is going, and Win7 support will end by 2020.
JG13_opcode Posted November 10, 2016 Posted November 10, 2016 Folks, a study was conducted that surveyed computer/network security professionals and one of the commonalities was that they all had auto updates on. Keep your system updated. 1
