Ground targets are very hard to see

But...a very positive aspect of the game is the extremely accurate target depiction on the map. For example your target is an armor column, if you zoom in the map you can see where the target column is in relation to towns (which side town), tree lines, bridges, intersections. This target study can be done enroute, select wings level auto-pilot, call up the map, zoom in and study the features to look for on your approach. Locomotives will exhaust steam (for easy ID).

Generally speaking, I think the map, terrain, and the challenge of finding a ground target is superb. It reminds me of my military experience...low and fast...fangs out, hair on fire. This game rocks in that regard.

Look at how close they are - plus you are using a much smaller aspect ratio than real life. Zoom in and using a huge monitor will display things to scale.

That's the biggest problem, it is being played on a much smaller view scale unless a use of large monitors and/or zoom is employed.

So the other option is to make things way bigger than they should be and then it just gets silly.

Look at the fire and especially the smoke. That is what we are missing!

That's assuming the "static planes" are fueled up, if they aren't - no fire or smoke. The ground vehicle all catch fire and smoke.

Ground targets have gotten much easier to see in the last week. The change has been stunning!  Wait, what change?  I went from a 20 inch monitor running at 1600 by 900 to a 24 inch monitor at 1920 by 1080. That 4 inches and better resolution has been a game changer.

Shadows in real life help, not to mention real life is 3D.

I think what we have now is easier than those grainy films from the 40's frankly.

That's a point that I don't think a lot of people are aware of. That zooming in 100% puts everything to real life scale. Finding targets, no matter the screen size, becomes so easy you'd think it's realistic... and it is. However we all know the issues with using full zoom, so I recommend binding zoom to a button that is readily accessible on your joystick or throttle. You can then adjust the speed at which the zoom happens by adjusting the camera settings (FOV inertia or something of that sort).

I will say, using a 60 inch TV as a monitor is pretty good for this game. Aside from that, I agree with what was said in that the map is very good at pinpointing location.

Looking forward to if/when VR kicks in. Much easier spotting this that way.

Bit of work cranking your body around though.

i missed a whole airfield in real life because it was under nose!!!! U might say im blind but it is easy to do!

Yes, for about 30 seconds, and the smoke is not much more than you get from a few cigars.

Fires like these do not disappear in about 30 seconds. Same goes for shot down planes!

Current some after destroyed plane or plant is joke :) but there is already nice smoke ingame and is not heave on fps - why not use it (black smokes over Stalingrad) ?

The smoke does slow things down if there's too much of it

Arh that can`t be much. We had far more smoke in the original Il-2 series and that was more than 10 years ago.

Different game engine, different logic.

There are things in the current mission editor/mission logic which should be simplified.

Smoke is one of them - it eats more resources than simply on the graphics end.

Smoke is based on fill rate and it is something that eats up resources. Even the old Il-2's grand smoke some appear to be imagining was time based and went away after a x amount of time. With enough smoke around the framerate will dive, and very quickly if it fills up the entire screen. Remember the huge smoke effects we have in Stalingrad? So many people whined about it that no online missions have them because they eat up frame rate.

Today's top gpus are handling lots of smoke with grace. If you have old hardware together with old software technology which barely keep up the 40 fps any addition will cause unplayable results.

But this never stopped strive to represent and simulate more real world and bring more immersion to games.

I have SLI 780Ti, I don't have any issue. The issue is those with less hardware, and for some reason - not everyone makes a lot of money - they can't afford better hardware. Not everyone can. That's why the online servers don't run the heavy smoke, that and the "I should be able to see my target from the whole way until I win!" mentality many have - and the latter element drives more of the visibility issues because they think they should be able to see everything easily when that isn't true.

There's a lot of reasons reality isn't "properly" simulated according to some - it could be but it would result in a lot of hurt feelings which drives a lot of settings. When it is properly simulated, as far as actual target visibility there are threads about "I can't see a plane I think I should be able to" which - whatever, they think they are aces and they think following a camo plane is easy as watching the cars go down a highway next to them.

Kind of like all of the "I'm an ace, how am I getting shot down in x airplane against y airplane" stuff that plagues all WW1 and WW2 sim forums. Everyone is the best in their own minds.
