Request for Infantry

One great RoF mod is the infantry.  A single infantry entity is effectively a squad.  They move, they shoot, and they can be killed.  Tremendous addition that allows me to recreate the RBII charging infantry :).

I miss having infantry and other ground units (machine guns, pill boxes) in BoS and would like to see them added with official support.  Right now I am limited to tank battles, which, while nice, really seem half done without infantry.  Machine guns (not AAA) are also really useful both for shooting at infantry and for suppressing AT guns.

And what kind of good IL2 pilot doesn't look forward to dropping a load of bombs into the middle of a massed infantry charge?

Yummie.

I hope the devs will let you make it happen  :)

I use mg fire to simulate some ground action but once you look closer its pretty empty.

+1 a little updated infantrie from RoF would do

Playable tanks, trucks, AA and AT -guns, ships in one big gameworld.

Maybe it's not necessary to re-use the RoF infantry mod. When I started building my first missions for BoS, it was still possible to manually place the games soldier models. They had an option to assign different animations to them (walk, run, lay down, etc.). I wasn't able to make these animations work and the soldiers were always static and looking upwards, either because I did something wrong or they were not fully implemented or locked. Moreover they did not have a damage model. In one of the later updates the devs removed the option to place soldiers.

Here are two old screenshot I've created with these soldiers

Obviously parts of the necessary technology for moving infantry is already in the game it just needs to be fully implemented.

That would be the perfect simulation, I fully agree !

Its giving me a neck pain just looking at the soldiers.

I wonder why they were removed.

Probably because they realised that some film-maker would create vast armies of shuffling zombies to bomb, strafe and otherwise molest, for instance by forcing them to square dance.   ;)

Conga line, maybe? :)

Thousands of individual soldiers is just too much.  What the RoF modders did was create a representation of a platoon.  They even included animations (legs moving) and a "killed" model (lying on the ground).  Better is always better :) but for starters I would really like nothing more than what was already created for RoF.

ROF & Men at War meets BOS

Flying low and strafing charging troops is the best part of flying two-seaters in RoF. It would be awesome to have infantry in IL-2. Close-air support missions in settlements, Stalingrad especially, would be a lot more immersive and interesting. Tank missions would also benefit immensely.

That's also the sort of thing they may be trying to avoid, for reasons which should be obvious.

Since it's a flight sim, they might want to stay focused on the flight and destruction of opposing machines rather than people.

That conveniently navigates around certain potential problems. Whether or not they're concerned about such things, I'm just guessing.

Enough troops for effect when you'r taxiing around bases and such is good.

I might be off-base there,

Not at all. When PWCG assigns you an anti-infantry mission, the briefing clearly says "Attack assaulting enemy troops near [location]", so the two-seater pilots should leave the enemy aircraft to the escorts and observers. Besides, something like an R.E.8. simply isn't made to engage enemy aircraft.

Avoid killing soldiers ? In todays games killing civilian is acepted by masses. I would like to see more immersive ground war of AI, hence we are responsible for air war.

that kinda looks like the Führer was visiting the front and is heading home now. (sry, just had to get it out)

Yeah, but half of them will be embedded in buildings :).  I still know of no programmatic way to determine terrain underneath a map position.  If I did there wouldn't be cannons in the river.

Would be super stoked to have infantry, been a dream of mine ever since i played my first flight sim.

They were pretty well implemented in Steel Fury Kharkov 42, would be nice to see a similar system.

Just troops de bussing from veh's and running for cover is good enough...

I'd like to see the infantry, just because they could then be modded to be player controlled. Then offer the basic tanks and infantry (along with the maps) for free and watch our community explode. Nothing would make me happier than to strafe/bomb player controlled units in a sim that has real physics.

However this is just a pipe dream ☹️️

I'd really like IL-2 to keep a focus on its roots. Adding things like AI infantry formations for the sake of rounding out an otherwise fairly empty world is a really good idea but I'd hate for it to become Oleg-level ambitious with PC infantry.

I am really, truly just asking for what is in ROF.  A more squishy target that can be created in large numbers.  Not controllable infantry, Just units on the ground that move and shoot bullets at a low rate of fire.  Beyond that I agree with Space Ghost that there are bigger priorities, but even that little bit would liven up the ground war quite a bit.

Exactly, Pat. If it's been done in RoF, I see no reason why it can't be done in IL-2 when mods are enabled.

What is also missing, are trenches, that show you, here is the frontline.

True, I always wondered about that. In Stalingrad itself people dug into the ruins, but outside there would have been extensive earthworks. Soldiers dig in the moment that they are static, and the longer they are in the same place the bigger the earthworks get.   These are usually easily visible from the air, since they cast shadows that are hard to camouflage.

They also have to change according to the chapter - ie change in the ground war. In RoF we just have a repeating texture painted on top: it does the job, given RoF's simplifying assumption of an unmoving front line, but it is not very convincing visually.

Wow, pretty gory.... what would a troop look like after being caught out in the open by a squad of Il2's?

Dead I guess? It doesn't have to be gory. They can just lay down and no longer move or shoot. Like when your pilot bails too low and hits the ground. I'm sure someone would make a "bloodiest gore ever" mod later on.

That's pretty much it. In RoF, when infantry units are killed, they simply end up on the ground. There's not even an animation or any sound effects.

In fact, when shot, sparks will fly out from the point of impact and the sound of a bullet hitting metal will be heard, as, after all, there's only so much a mod can do.

Of course, you're moving too fast to hear the sound effects or see the death animation (or rather the lack thereof), and in the middle of strafing run with MG fire flying up at you, you're too focused to take note of the sparks, so none of that matters, except if you're making a machinima.

Stuff blows up on sims.... was wondering what the interpretation of the devs would be of what a human looks like when he's been hit by a 23mm.

Personally, I would prefer if they just lay down and "slept" like the pilots currently do when they hit the ground

Fallout 4? The developers cannot win on this one: underplay the gore and they will be accused of sanitizing the reality of war, make it bloody and they will be accused of pandering to our worst instincts to revel in gratuitous violence.

Just falling over works just fine for me as well: simple to program too.

Btw what i miss is simple physics representation of kinetic energy, we can see that on planes when mr. Zebra dropps his bombs. But that look sometimes ocword. Besides planes we do not have that in any object, flying soldiers from bomb or cannons blast would add to fun part :)

No need for gore or blood.

I don't think the game needs rag doll physics, don't need a gore fest... this is a flight sim, not a run and gun arcade shooter...
