Let's face it, the Spitfire Mk.Vb will probably not be amazing.

Thanks for solving mystery - I would have been up all night worrying about it. (First world problems ;)

I probably didn't express myself well but I was wondering if the term "kidney exhaust" was one you got from a period document or if it's one you created in order to describe the shape of the exhausts? If it's the latter it's a nice metaphor :)

...

Not my invention, the name for exhausts, but something encountered many times when people speak about Spitfires and Hurricanes. A quick google Search returns plenty of web articles for the term : link

For every 190 fanboy who gets all emotional when it's not the best, there is at least one spitfire fanboy who feels the same.

There was a guy named GunRunner who would edit the "historical" plane sets on his server so that he could fly a spitfire and have it be the fastest aircraft on the map.

Get ready for incoming feels when the Spit Vb doesn't turn into a war winner.

You are correct sir.  Every map on War Birds of Prey had a date which always gave the FW pilots planes which were a year older than the current Spit.  You always had a Spit which was faster than you.   I called out a few of map makers on it and got in trouble with them but there is a reason their server died the way it did.  The MK V is already outclassed by the FW A5 in many ways.  It's still going to be a good plane but you will have to choose your fight carefully with G2s and G4s let alone an A5.

I hope it performs as well or better than the Yak-1b. If it does, it will be the first ride to get me over to the allied side on occasion. Looking forward to the Spit v Schmitt duels (from both sides) if they are at least remotely competitive.

I don't really care how outclassed it will be... I'll be flying it on a regular basis until a Hurricane comes along :)

It should fill the same niche and be similar.  The same tactics and dog fighting style that work on a Spitfire Mk V should be applicable to a Yak-1b.

It does look kind of Silly, but with the longer Tailwheel of later Models it would have been practical: (Take-Off run was still shorter than Normal Spitfire.)

No Bf 109 used that jettisonable undercarriage operationally. It was tested on G-series 109s (think it was a G-3 or G-4) in an attempt to improve ground clearance for most importantly 500 kg bombs, but the impracticality of the jettisonable undercarriage meant it never saw service. Not sure if the longer tail wheel on the K-series 109s would have permitted the use of 500 kg bombs however, since I can't recall them being tested with or even prepared for bomb pylons.

Might be worth noting that Bf 109 Fs and at least the early Gs could take off with 500 kg bombs, and afaik did so a few times at least on the Western front (presumably when enemy was in range of paved airfields). However it meant only about 5 cm ground clearance and serious overload (several hundred kg beyond maximum take-off weight), so it needed a paved and long runway to take off safely, and could under no circumstance land without first jettisoning the bomb.
