WWGeezer Posted October 29, 2016 Posted October 29, 2016 (edited) In our squad we have very late stumbled onto the PvE missions in ROF that Vander built for the Syndicate. These are masterful COOP's for open servers and great community building missions. There is a single German and Entente airfield and missions launch every 15 minutes or so. Subtitles tell you to start you engine and circle the base, while your orders are generated. Typically a few AI planes lead you to the mission. The minute you take off, the plane set changes at the base and the next mission is in the que. This is happening at both the German and Entente fields. I think there are about eight missions on each side( simple task, patrol the front, bomb the factory). There are AI enemies and my understanding is the number of AI tune down depending on how many people are on the server. The masterful thing about it is the mission structure is so open that you can run a COOP as a squad on an open server that any flyer can join in on. We have hesitated to do this in more scripted COOP's because strangers joining in can disrupt the mission, but the experience so far in the ROF missions is a single flyer can join in and play OPFOR and go after the squad flying the mission or can just fly a patrol with a few AI on the other side without problems. There is plenty going on for everyone. It leads to some pretty wonderful random activities. It is great to be coming back to base from a patrol and seeing a group cuing up on the runway for a bombing sortie. Text subtitles let you know what is going on so if you are still in good shape you can circle the base and head out with the next sortie. Very immersive. I am a mission builder but the code on these missions are way over my head. Here is the link to the PvE missions Vander built. http://riseofflight.com/forum/topic/49237-vote-your-final-vintage-mission/page-1 Would be great if someone with more skills than me could attempt to build a similar type of mission for BOS! WWGeezer Posted October 29, 2016 Author Posted October 29, 2016 Some of the draw is once you understand how it works it is easy to navigate. Vandy worked in a morse code sound effect into the mission, so the pattern is the same everytime. 1. Message says...."Patrol 1 Mission will start shortly, please wait instruction" 2. Message says...."Start your engines, the mission is about to begin" 3. Message says...." Form up over the base and await orders" The two AI aircraft immediatelly roll out and make a slow circle around the airfield....the rest of us join up with them circling the airfield The lead AI shoots a flair, you here the "dot dot dash" of the morse code to alert you that orders are coming. Text comes up 4. Message says..."Patrol 1 meet at Section A and patrol north half of the front" AI aircraft head off and we follow. There is something about sitting on the ground, quietly awaiting orders, not knowing what the mission is, fumbling with the map once you get orders to make sure you know where you are going that adds a level of tension that is very immersive. The missions themselves are very simple, but if it is run on an open server, you know you are going to encounter live pilots. They might be flying their own mission, they might be hunting you. Sometimes not a whole lot happens, and you focus on providing escort, watching over the bombers and landing your aircraft safely. very cool....
WWGeezer Posted October 29, 2016 Author Posted October 29, 2016 Also while you are flying back from your sortie you might here the morris code launching another mission back at base and see that they are heading towards a factory target and decide to head there to support. Might be two AI by themselves because no one joined them or it might be a crowd. It is the randomness and depth of it that makes it work.
