as the topic title says, is there an eqivalent of the black death track in BOS.?

I don't think there is but it's a great idea!

For those not sure of what the Blackdeath track is. In IL-2 Forgotten Battles and on we used the blackdeath.ntrk replay as a common benchmark. It was a complex attack scene featuring IL-2s attacking armored columns and aircraft all over the place. At one point it was a good indicator of what your experience would be like. If you could get good FPS on this track then anywhere else in the game should be pretty smooth.

The Black Death track was brilliant. Over the years I gradually went from seeing a slideshow to the whole episode as smooth as you like. Some sort of benchmark frame-counting track would be a great idea.

Cheers.

I assume this could be created by a mission maker? Doesnt necessarily have to be the devs?

Tracks won't give you the same frame rate as live gameplay. Probably because they aren't running AI or something. So using recorded tracks as benchmarks doesn't work.

The Black Death was used by several computer testing websites as one of their graphics benchmark tests, back when flight simulation was still a big deal.

If a computer could run it smoothly it was a pretty stout build at that time.

I remember my old Dell with it's mighty Ti 4400, grinding to a slideshow trying to run it.

S!

EL. Do you remember all the tweaks and stuff we did to game settings to squeeze the last few FPS out of that track  It would be nice to have benchmarking track in BoX too. Maybe a lighter one, for lower end machines and a heavy one for the all out gaming rigs?

I used to upgrade my computer and video card often  enough that I never needed to test it with it.

I never bothered with it

Great memories, so many times I`ve run that track while tweaking settings

I didn't either. I watched it a few times though. I guess my rig at the time could handle what IL2 was throwing at it. The only time I would get the micro stutters is when new people would spawn in.

Old Sturm AI voicepacks/radiocoms are still a benchmark not reached by the new BoX series.

Good point, but would it not serve as a good graphics only benchmark. It would help people identify if their graphics performance was ok but CPU was the bottle neck?

It's easy to test understanding the role of the CPU vs GPU in these games. I'm no expert but I know the CPU gets loaded up by other aircraft, AI, ground and air physics and such. So if I do a repeatable mission like just sitting on the runway with a big flight of wingmen, turning my head repeatedly, I'll get consistent results. And running that test at 1080p and 2160p yields the same FPS so it's a good bet that I'm CPU bottlenecked.

A free flight scenario doing the same thing, then the graphic settings like antialiasing and such show hits.

But recording a track and then replaying it, I think it's about 10fps faster by default. In Early Access the Devs asked for periodic performance tests on different systems in order to fine tune the graphic presets.

Omg,, The Black Death track,, that has bought back some memories, I can still feel the stutters !

From the comments I suspect others like me knew every bloomin inch of that test, what fps where etc.  How running it once made the stutters less the second time.

Whole evenings entertainment on its own when new Gfx drivers/updates came out..

Feels good to know I was not alone  :salute:

What would be possible is that there could be a Benchmark Mission built into the game where the AI flies through a live scenario, not a recorded track. That would give you a realistic and consistent measure of performance.
