JG4_Sputnik Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 Since the reduced cockpit textures in BoS (compared to CloD) was a DirectX limitation (I think I red it somewhere that CloD had up to 12 different texture files or layers or whatever), would it be possible to just "swap" the CLoD textures into the BoS planes cockpits when BoS goes DX11? Would be great to see an improvement in cockpit quality and not "only" in landscape quality once DX11 is implemented. Also, what kind of improvement could one expect from that change? Higher res aircraft skins would also be nice Cheers

I find it highly unlikely that simply swapping textures would work, since they're based on different models the mapping would probably be off. I think DX11 is about performance improvements rather than visual improvements. One thing I'd really like, and hope, to see is the bubble of visibility increased. 2

Most of the cockpits in IL-2 aren't in CloD, and for the ones that are, there are still differences in how some elements are coloured, which to me indicates that the IL-2 team and the CloD team used different reference materials. I assume the IL-2 team will stick with the reference they've stuck to since the game came out.

I think if I remember correctly something was mentioned on the forum regarding higher textures for the aircraft etc and I think it was touted as a possibility. (I can't find the original post ) Maybe something for modders to do in the future? Regarding graphics settings it does look as though there will be much more control overall and hopefully as a result the LoD should be pushed out further. Different engine, different 3D models (with different UV wrapping), etc. What could be said is, will higher resolution textures be used? And yeah, the devs have said that they would like to do that. So either they already have the source files for all of their textures at a higher resolution or everything will have to be done over again. Either way, when the DX11 renderer arrives I'm only expecting that the game will look the same (which is already spectacular) and that hopefully performance will be up. Visual improvements and VR improvements will likely come later on.

Even without making maximum use initially of all possible DX11 features. Seems to me it would be extremely unlikely to be able to make such a deep change to such a central feature of the game and come out with precisely the same result visually? I'm asking questions here really of someone knowledgeable, as it just seems to me highly probable there will be visual differences. Edited October 24, 2016 by kendo
J2_Trupobaw Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 (edited) Old planes are being improved upon all the time, so after DX11 settles in we may see updates to existing planes - same way we saw updates to FW 190 cockpit, or recently I-16 iron sights. More likely, we may also see improved cockpit quality for planes released after DX11 move, BoK ones.Porting CloD content? Unlikely to work. Edited October 24, 2016 by Trupobaw
