They've kept the shape of the stations! Awesome!

This one shows landing and docking with a bit of outfitting, the current "loading screen" will likely be gone once Alpha 3 lands on the backers computers as they're aiming for an seamless experience:

Its already shaping up to be the best space game in the last decade.

Elite, BOS this year is shaping up to be one of the best in quite awhile imho.

Great stuff, very happy they've made the stations in scale with the ships.

I wish I had some spare money to get the Alpha.

This shows docking into a space station.

New Alpha 3.0 released on Friday, HOTAS now works work, so with TrackIR (OR too) controls are where they pretty much need to be, but there is a bug in multiplayer where you simply cannot connect, unfortunately the team promised the Alpha that week, if they hadn't delivered it I suspect a lot of crying. 1C/777 decision to not release multiplayer knowing it was going to be a buggy mess was a very sound one.

Have they given an estimate for the Betas? I'm waiting for the second beta :(

Nothing definite but its not "soon" thats the Elite for "2 weeks be sure"

Apparently Premium Beta for single player will be released TODAY  :o:

Just upgraded to Premium Beta for £15 :) I think that real life will suffer this year what with BoS, DCS, Team Fusion and 1946 as well as Elite!

Good news.

Interesting to see the Star Citizen vid. Lots of technical problems but honestly that kind of naturalness made me like the outfit more. Bet the bossman was fuming off camera though.

From the sounds of his introduction, SC certainly does not lack ambition.

Posted

With all the money they got they could really be ambitious. But also there is a lot of marketing behind these shows. :-)

Anyway I think Elite is far closer to the goal they have set themselves.

As long as they remain indie, that guy (Chris Roberts) IS the bossman :-)

What is star citizen about? Is it a pure space shooter?

Posted

no, it's a MMO + RPG campaign

The sound of nerdgasms..

(Star Citizen dogfight vid)

eww

Regarding SC, the starships and the maps are wonderful but the FXs and UI are really bad IMO: it seems that they are focusing in models and animations more than in the gameplay.

The overall feeling is "meh".

On the other side I'm really excited for E:D.

By SC you mean Star Citizen????

How could you know what you say... except a dev version of the Hangar module, nothing is available to look at/play for now...

Yep. Looking at the Dogfight Module in the video posted above I don't like the explosions, the lasers and the internal UI of the starship (I don't mean the game's UI, but the radar, weapons ect...).

But the 3D models and the lighting on them are marvelous: the map with the cracked planet is amazing.

Well... do you realize that the Dogfight Module isn't available to test for now, that the video shows very early stuff, and that all this will most probably change during the dev?

Of course I do.

I'm a little fussy with FX when the game is displaying amazing 3d models.

That's the reason I'm really pleased with BoS' effects and long time ago I harshly criticized the first screenshot of CloD in which there was an in flame engine.

Any info about the expected minimum and recommended system specs?

Posted

This is copied from the Backers forum

I know there's been some discussion about the machine specs needed for the alpha test, as we're approaching the first build delivery I can share some of the development specs of where we are at the moment. Optimisation and performance are obviously ongoing tasks and as more features are added through the alpha and beta periods we'll need to keep revisiting it.

To play the first build released in December we're currently looking at the following:

Direct X 11
Quad Core CPU ( 4 x 2Ghz is a reasonable minimum)
2 GB System Ram (more is always better)
DX 10 hardware GPU, 1GB video RAM(my reasonably low end machine has a GTX 285 with 2GB)

As I say we're looking to try and reduce the spec if possible through detail options and optimisations, so the final min spec for the game should be lower than that stated above, but for the initial alpha tests you'll need to be in that range.

Edit: Minimum video ram spec updated to 1GB.

Nice videos. Just wondering about the speed particles. I've played the original Elite on an Acorn Electron in B/W, there the 'flyby stars' made sense as there was really nothing else to orientate on. But now that the graphics are rich the floating particles look a bit odd and artificial.

Couldn't edit my post, found a video where those particles aren't there, read they wanted to implement a slider for them. Much better IMHO.

Looking good.

I got Beta. Not premium, but just Beta.

Expect later this year to play as well.

I see them as speed indicators in the full sense of being artificial to give you a sense of speed and motion, in the asteroid field you'll see particles of dust/asteroid and they act differently. Its the same perhaps psychological effect we have with sound in space, which has been explained by having speakers inside the ship to give you the audio sensory requirement, indeed if you lose your screen and the vacuum of space enters you'll also lose the sounds.

I've never been in Elite series so yesterday I tried "Elite II" with DosBox: damn, the gameplay is really depth.

The design of those games is amazing compared to most of the current games. Just look at the difference between the original X-COM and the new one.

The whole game came on 1 720kb floppy on the Amiga. To install it on a hard drive all you did was drag the icon to the hard drive icon :)

I was hoping by the time I had got to my ripe old age I would be immune to this sort of thing. It seems I am totally not. Signed up to beta.
