Elite: Dangerous

Thanks for the comments, everyone - I've now bought it. I'll have to see how I get on with the single-player mode, and find out  multiplayer is practical with my sometimes erratic connection. If you see a Sidewinder towing a "Don't shoot, clueless noob" banner, that'll be me...

Well, I've got it downloaded, and managed to dock, undock and shoot the canisters in the training missions - but I'm having real problems setting up controls. Does this game really only expect a single controller? It seems to - or at least I can't see any way it distinguishes between devices, and I normally have a couple of gamepads plugged in, as well as my joystick and rudder pedals. I don't want to have to unplug and plug in stuff every time I play, as this will no doubt result in BoS getting devices confused. Or maybe I'm just being dense, and have missed something obvious...

Please ignore the above - I was obviously misunderstanding something, though it would help ih the control setup screen actually gave a bit more information...

Very true Andy, it is confusing.

A progress report of sorts: Apparently I'm harmless, penniless, aimless and helpless...

They forgot to add clueless. About 2/3 of my credit balance was the result of a hostile something-or-another that decided I was fair game. Fortunately a friendly something-else turned up, and between us we vapourised it - I'm not sure I deserved the bounty. So far, I've only flown in solo mode - the advice seems to be to get some distance from the starting system before risking PvP, as the griefers hang around the near systems, looking for noobs.

Despite the obvious differences, it still bears more than a passing resemblence to the original Elite which I played the best part of 30 years ago. It shows promise, though I've clearly got lots to learn.

In my opinion, the easiest (and most entertaining) way to make money is to hang around the Resource Extraction Sites (RES) and just fly around the miners scanning them and other ships.

You can usually find some wanted miners, or ships coming in to hassle the miners.

When they come up wanted. I just start shooting.

There's usually a security force floating around the RES too, so let them slap the big ships down for you then go in for the clean up. Just don't shoot anyone till you have confirmed they're wanted.

It's easy money, and a much more fun than trading.

Exploration is worth good money, but it can get very boring with the distances you need to travel.

I'm into exploration.

I found this a few days ago... heh...

If you have an x52 or x52 pro the stock controls work very well. I just got back into this as well.

An old screenshot from my very first trip towards empire space but it neatly connects E:D with WWII flight sims.

Bounty hunting. :o:

The criminal Richard Feynman? What did he do to deserve that?

Strange choice of names aside, the AI can be remarkably dumb sometimes - scan one, find he's wanted, drive right up on his six, deploy weapons. No reaction until you open fire. Makes bounty hunting a little too simple, though you do need to pick your targets (and avoid hitting the Feds by mistake - they don't like that...). I'm progressing well, though I suspect I'll get bored with bounty hunting and try something else fairly soon.

Has anyone here tried the Horizons beta yet?

Well, whether you keep bounty hunting or only get attacked by the odd pirate while trading/mining: you're gonna shoot up a lot of celebrities: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=93151:biggrin:

Okay, Horizons is to be released within next two hours.

I think it is time to fire it up again after a pretty long break. Elite did keep it`s grip for a couple of months, then it became too repetitive for me. But I did purchase Horizons still a while ago, I think landing on a planet and operating there will keep my interest up for a while. I hope it adds more diversity to the gameplay. It adds missions to the surface but I don`t know if it changed them otherwise very much.

IRC there is some kind of mission overhaul coming to Elite but I don`t think it made to this release.

Edit: change list to 2.0 https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=211781&p=3255538&viewfull=1#post3255538
