Elite: Dangerous

The resolution is an issue in these development kits, but for Elite at least it is quite playable, for flight sims it will need higher resolution, the good news is that Oculus seem quite aware of the needs of the sim enthusiast and I'm sure they will have that in mind when they develop the final retail version.

Good news. Apart from the fact that at some stage my inner geek will force me to splash out and buy one. Cheers.

With the Oculus it must be quite a sight.  :o:  At the moment I'm doing alright with TrackIR and still need to tweak some controls.

Also, I should consider the security levels of the systems, before accepting a courier mission.

Also, I should stop freaking out when hyperdrive disengages and delivers another "HOLY **** I'M GONNA JUMP RIGHT INTO A SUN" moment.

, I haven't got on with track ir in elite for some reason but I find it indispensable for any other game.

Update the games in TrackIR as it was added a few months ago.

it is a little worrying, I can almost feel the sunburn after each jump, I am now conditioned to quickly roll and pull after each jump so I don't get frazzled.

I always chop the throttle when I enter the jump. On the plus side it means you can refuel straight away....

only if you have the fuel scoop.

It's amazing, and netcode has really improved.

I just hope that the current mining system is at 30% of develpment: IIRC there should be a "minigame" for the extraction (improved by the current outfitting), so that basic loadout can't be used to farm palladium at will.

Right now in 30 minutes you're able to gain 300k: bye bye trading.

Yeah but who doesn't have a fuel scoop?! Must. Buy. Everything.

I still only have a sidewinder so can't have everything.

I'd need to sacrifice something like the scanner to mount a fuel scoop, wouldn't I?

On a different matter: there appears to be something wrong with the E:D community. I skimmed the forums and hardly saw anyone complaining that they have to grind "credits" - as they call it over there - in order to unlock or "buy" - as they call it over there - another ship or additional equipment. I mean, they paid for the game - they should have everything available to them from the get-go shouldn't they?

Well, trading and earning are integral to the lore, I don't recall stories from Stalingrad where pilots needed to grind XP points to upgrade their aircraft.

anything that goes in the internal compartments, in my case I decided to not sacrifice the cargo capacity because it seriously limits the available missions.

I see.

So, in theory, getting a Hauler should be the solution to that problem. :)

I bought a new headset (the mic on my existing one snapped off). This means I have now been able to install VoiceAttack and the ASTRA pack. If you haven't tried this, it's well worth a look.

Anyway, I now have my HOTAS operational again now the pod units are complete:

Roccat Powergrid is running on the phone.

The placement of the HOTAS is not ideal at the moment but it will do for now.

I have to get a Rift - will hold off for the consumer version though.

I only tried the Beta 2 for 30 minutes or so a few weeks ago and updated to Beta 3 yesterday, put on the DK2 and was blown away.

Amazing experience and i think they updated or improved the visuals somehow, because it looks super crisp on screen now (not with DK2, but on the monitor at least) and the lightning and shadowing also looks different somehow. The planets look also much better. I still have to figure out the new features, changes and other additions. It was already good when i play Beta 1 for quite some time, but it's really amazing now. Their developement process is really impressive and they really seem to concentrate on exactly the right things to improve it even further.

I NEED to check it out. Have not played since beta 2. I am trying to wait for "release" but its getting harder.

Nice setup Thereisonlyone. Very clean lines. Much better than my wooden setup.....while functional using an old playseat, definitly not pretty.

Hauler smauler, the cobra is where it's at. Vaxxtx, get back in there, it's good stuff.

anybody else with the DK2 noticing an improvement with beta 3.04?

I upgraded my ship to an Eagle but it coincided with the update today, so I don't know if it was the update or the new ship that has improved the visual quality for me.

Isnt there going to be a wipe at the end of beta though? I always hated wipes.

Well, the last change to beta 3 put me back in a sidewinder but I still had all my credits so not sure. I guess the launch wipe will put you back to the start though.

Nice work on those Elite themed bcockpit builds :) Seems Elite will live well up to it's reputation :)

I am not sure if we'll see another beta yet, or whether the next big update will be gamma, but once Gamma/Release candidate hits they have stated that we won't face any wipes unless absolutely necessary . Perhaps we shall know tomorrow when the next newsletter arrives as they will be revealing the release date.

It does indeed, release date is 16 December :)

Listening to this just makes my spine tingle with anticipation.

Hell yes. I think this one has a lot of furture content scalability.

Great times ahead with this game.

Love it!!!

Some people seem a bit upset that its being released on schedule, as they are experts at writing and releasing games and recon that Frontier wont be able to sort the multiplayer out in time :)

Looks impressive. Even more so after viewing the above video. If only flight sim developers could grasp how important actual gameplay is.

I'm not sure whether get ED or go for star citizen instead. SC looks more like its aimed at fans of consoles and the Battlefield franchise. Is Elite the more mature of the two?

Is Elite the more mature of the two?

Based on heritage yes, Elite is a cult classic from the days of BBC micro computers and the likes, that's 30 years ago so it makes Elite the granddaddy of them all.

I was very hyped about SC for a while, and had no idea about Elite till later in its development.

I chose to back ED after watching some dev videos. SC looks ok, but release somewhere in 2016. Elite is almost done and have a 1 to 1 scale of the universe is amazing. Also much, much cheaper to get into right now.

Anyway, there is a good SC vs ED on a forum, and my impression is yes, Elite looks more "mature" with more in depth stuff vs SC.

You don't really have to choose like that. If SC gets finished, it will arrive probably 1.5-2 years after ED. You'll be able to get SC for 30$ if you don't care about alpha or beta access, so it's not a huge investment.

For now, we can compare strictly the dogfighting, since that and racing is all you can do in SC. I have both and I don't think it's as simple as saying "SC is for console and BF players." SC does have hype-a-bolic marketing which may give a negative impression.

I agree that the ED vision is more "explore unknown space, trade, mine, sometimes fight other ships" while the SC vision seems more like "fight other ships while mining, trading, exploring known space." SC's universe will be tiny compared to ED.

The SC DM is more detailed in terms of being able to break a ship apart. Losing a part of your ship that held certain maneuver thrusters will be noticeable when controlling the ship.

An ED ship is a hitpoint sponge with targetable subsystems. ED models those systems to great detail, and SC has nothing like the low-signature, sneaky gameplay option that ED has.

Flying with a joystick and flight assist modes mostly on, I find ED ships are easier to control, and it's easier to get crosshairs on target. With flight assist modes off, ED feels like it has a better, more "pure" newtonian mode. SC does try to give you a more lively feeling when thrusters fire, sort of like BoS vs Il2 '46. But this is still WIP for both games.

Both games have an artificial <500m/s speedlimit due to MP network limitations.

ED is basically 100% open world, i think SC will have a campaign in addtion to the open world setting.

So if you want a story based campaign, ED is not the right game for you.

But you can basically do everything in ED that you could expect from a space sim. Even though some features still feel a bit rough. Mining is one of those features, it's not the most exciting or efficient way to make money, but maybe there'll be improvements or additions for that until the release or even afterwards. I'm also not sure yet how the end game will look like. As soon as you have the best ship with the best systems, you could basically only make more money or explore or fight. But there's no room to expand even further, at least non that i can see for now. Of course it can take a long time until you have the best ship and depending on the role you prefer, the best ship can vary a bit (trading, fighting etc.).

I think i've spend 6 hours or so in beta 3 and still have my first ship (i could afford to buy some other ships, but they don't really fit my current courier/trading playing style).

I would definately recommend getting ED, even if you plan to buy SC later. It will still take a long time until SC gets released.

I got increasingly unhappy with SC's pricing model.  There are quite a few ships that you can buy that cost over $100 of real-world cash and at least one that is $250.  Earlier in the program, you got a lifetime insurance policy with every ship purchase but that ended months ago.  Unless it came back, your ship investment dollars are at risk unless you buy and stay current on in game insurance.

It feels like pay-to-win to me, or maybe pay-to-survive.  That being said, I know a LOT has changed this year, and I don't remember the last time I actually fired up SC.

I bought into both SC and ED in a wave of depression over the abysmal failure that was X: Rebirth.

E:D is looking awesome, and my one complaint is that when real life intrudes on the game there is no way to pause or save because of the nature of the living real-time universe.

Thanks guys for the replies. ED sounds like the more attractive of the two for the sort of thing I'm looking for. I had another look at Star Citizen the other night, but it looks like some fairly commonplace racing and shooting games sort of daisy chained into one title. I might have to edit on that and see how it pans out.

^ Awesome, truly.

They actually intend to make the game fully modable (and people are already making 3d models for that) and the ability to run private servers. Mission editor, total conversions (Star Wars!) etc.

Or, it could implode and never be finished. But the intention is actually for a quite "grown up" PC game.

Whatever, I'm playing Elite until then!
