Searching for things to fight

If you are free hunting or flying in a pair or group of fighters, how do you find things to fight? I have been flying patrols over targets, the border, (friendly) airfields, I just can't seem to locate anything. Maybe it's just my awful luck or only being able to look around with a hatswitch. Does anyone have tips for hunting?

Several things you can do, but remember that all of it takes practice to be useful.

 

1: Get on TeamSpeak and ask your teammates where the action is.

 

2: Look at the mission map and locate the main objectives. These might be good areas to patrols.

 

3: Look out for spotter's messages popping up on your screen. They will alert you about nearby targets and if one of your mission objectives is under attack. Not all servers use systems like this.

 

4: Look out for clues that are visible from longer distances: Tracers, explosions, contrails etc.

 

5: If you happen across a friendly aircraft and don't know what to do with yourself at the moment, follow him. He's likely to be heading for the action and some escort is always appreciated anyway.

Practice using the mouse to look around and map the throttle to its wheel. That way you can fly without taking your eyes off the screen. Get some altitude and patrol the traffic areas where the enemy will be transiting from airfield to frontline. You should find some targets to jump.
