Ceowulf Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 Hi Guys, I'm in the early stages of building a new PC. This is my first build - I've been playing ROF on a 2011 21.5 imac. My question, as the title says, is if IL2 BOS/M/K need more than a i6600k. Would a i6700k or something else make a big difference? I keep reading all over that hyperthreading doesn't help games much and won't for a while. However, I keep reading posts here saying IL2 is unusually demanding on the CPU for ai logic and physics. What's a good call for someone who likes that sweet spot of 80% performance for 60% price but wants Il2 to look awesome. (Plus ROF but that's a given.) I already own, as of today, a Philips 40” 4k monitor and I am imagining mashing the resolution to 1440p if I can. Never been above 1080p before so I planned to kind of feel my way in and I don't want to pay the cutting edge premium for 4k GPU(s), etc. If 4k works, cool. If not, later. I plan on a EVGA GTX 1070 SC, EVGA FTW Z170Amotherboard, 16gb ddr4 3000 of some kind, and some SATA type ssd. I don't know if I'll overclock or not. I don't know how or even why (gaming) yet. Please speak slowly and loudly. Thanks in advance. <>< Ceowulf
1PL-Husar-1Esk Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 Go for i7 6700K with 1070 and 3200Mhz ddr4 BOS&ROF @2K res runs on ultra and all maxed out without problem.
L3Pl4K Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 Take the I7 6700K. Some Games can use mulit threading.
Jade_Monkey Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 Im gonna recommend the i5. Not only there is little benefit for gaming, but in many cases (especially with IL2) hyperthreading causes massive stuttering (not for everyone). I have a 6 core / 12 thread CPU and the only way to play IL2 is with hyperthreading off. With the i5 i would definitely recommend applying some overclocking.
Demon_ Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 Would a i6700k or something else make a big difference? I keep reading all over that hyperthreading doesn't help games much and won't for a while. However, Ceowulf No, you can overclock the 6600K at the same frequency then the 6700K for the same result. Games (ROF, BOS, DCS, etc) don't take benefit of the hyper threading technology.
SYN_Mike77 Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 I have the I5 6600K overclocked to 4.000mhz with a 1070 Gpu and 16 gigs of ram. and Bos/bom runs at 60 fps pretty much constantly.
Demon_ Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 Try to find something better than the EVGA FTW. Like the Gigabytes Z170X-UD3, Asus Z170-A. Even the Gigabytes Z170X-gaming 3.
Ceowulf Posted October 16, 2016 Author Posted October 16, 2016 (edited) Thanks for the responses, Guys. Demon, I already bought the EVGA z170 FTW before you had written that but it's still in the wrapper. What don't you like about the FTW? I know I don't get USB 3.1 but I chose it thinking I was getting a better company for customer service. Thanks, Ceowulf<>< Edited October 16, 2016 by Ceowulf
Demon_ Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 EVGA motherboard are not the best for cpu overclocking, only 5-6 power phases PWM. But still a good board.
LLv34_Flanker Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 S! I like the Asus Z170-WS motherboard a lot, no complaints here.
W_Braun Posted October 28, 2016 Posted October 28, 2016 Go with the fastest base clock quad core that you can afford. No need for hyperthreading and all the bells and whistles for gaming. You want a fast processor that you don't need to overclock. 6700K is a good choice for gamers but the 6600K is a better deal and you won't see the difference.

I agree except for the no overclocking part. Why wouldnt you overclock to get more performance for free? (Negligible power consumption increase in terms of $)
1PL-Husar-1Esk Posted October 28, 2016 Posted October 28, 2016 (edited) Yea, actually greater clock has i7, i push my to 4,8 Ghz without sweat on Asus VII Ranger cooled by Noctua nh-d14. Edited October 28, 2016 by 307_Tomcat
W_Braun Posted October 29, 2016 Posted October 29, 2016 I agree except for the no overclocking part. Why wouldnt you overclock to get more performance for free? (Negligible power consumption increase in terms of $) Because a cpu that is binned higher from factory is more stable than what most overclockers can achieve. You don't just want a fast processor, you want a rock solid and stable system. 6700K runs 4ghz stock, 4.2ghz turbo which is plenty. Overclocking that to 4.5 or even 4.8 you'll never notice any real world difference. 6700K also has 2mb more cache than the 6600k. Cache memory is important when playing sim games.
Jade_Monkey Posted October 30, 2016 Posted October 30, 2016 I'm not that sure the i7 are binned higher, just clocked higher by default. Intel knows that the majority of consumers don't bother overclocking so higher stock clocks justify the price increase (other than cache and HT) for many users.
