andyw248 Posted October 9, 2016 Posted October 9, 2016 Just wanted to thank everyone who has recommended reading the book about the Battle of Midway, "Shattered Sword"! I received my copy today and couldn't put it aside ever since. As good as Bergerud's "Fire In The Sky" on the airwar in the Solomon Islands. 1
JG4_dingsda Posted October 9, 2016 Posted October 9, 2016 I just finished it and also think that it is a great read.

Just for interest, Anthony Tully & Johnathan Parshall have a website about the Japanese Navy (Nihon Kaigun or Teikoku Kaigun) that is well worth visiting. 2
SYN_Speck Posted October 10, 2016 Posted October 10, 2016 Thanks for the post, I've always got an eye open for a good read...

Thanks for the link, a treasure trove of info there, especially nice to see so much info on all the auxiliary ships and the smaller not so glamorous classes Cheers Dakpilot

TheElf Posted October 15, 2016 Posted October 15, 2016 Next on your list should be: 1. The First Team: Pacific Naval Air Combat from Pearl Harbor to Midway, Lundstrom, John B. 2. The First Team and the Guadalcanal Campaign: Naval Fighter Combat from August to November 1942, Lundstrom, John B. 3. Carrier Strike: The Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands October 1942, Hammel, Eric

Carrier Strike: The Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands October 1942, Hammel, Eric Exactly... I just read "The First Team", and it's very informative too. Actually, "Shattered Sword" and "The First Team" compliment each other very well - the former tells the story of the battle from the perspective of the Japanese sailors and aviators, while the latter tells it as it appeared to the American task forces and air groups. Both books are excellent reads, very well written.
